    • A scrambling code generating apparatus of a downlink transmitter in a UMTS mobile communication system, which uses one primary scrambling code for separation of base stations and multiple secondary scrambling codes for channel separation. The apparatus includes a first m-sequence generator for generating a first m-sequence and a second m-sequence generator for generating a second m-sequence. A first summer adds the first and second m-sequences to generate the primary scrambling code. A plurality of first masking sections each shift the first m-sequence, and a plurality of second masking sections corresponding to the respective first masking sections each shifts the second m-sequence. A plurality of second summers each adds one of the first shifted m-sequences with the second m-sequence corresponding to the first m-sequence. The output of the second summers thus generates the multiple secondary scrambling codes.

    • The invention provides an apparatus and method for generating overspread orthogonal codes. Overspread orthogonal codes are generated code-multiplying orthogonal codes generated by any method and the overspread orthogonal code length is the product of the code lengths of the orthogonal codes that were code-multiplied. In a telecommunication application, for example, a communication signal is first spread by a first orthogonal code and then overspread by a second orthogonal code. The output of the overspreading process may be further overspread by a third orthogonal code and so on until a desired code length is obtained. Thus, orthogonal code lengths unobtainable by any of the known orthogonal code generators may be generated by overspreading using codes generated by any orthogonal code generator(s) to obtain a desired code length.

    • A radio transmission apparatus capable of preventing a reduction of the capacity of a downlink and preventing an increase of interference inside or outside a cell involved in transmission of MCS information. In this radio transmission apparatus, the spreading code specification section 112 specifies combinations of spreading codes that will express MCS numbers. For example, the spreading code specification section 112 specifies 7 codes out of spreading codes null1 to null8. That is, if the selected MCS number is null1, the spreading code specification section 112 specifies spreading codes null2 to null8 and does not specify spreading code null1. This allows combinations of spreading codes to carry information on MCSnull1 to null8. Since power corresponding to unused spreading codes is not detected through power detection of a despread signal on the receiving side, the spreading code number can be determined as the MCS number.
