    • A method, system and apparatus for spreading physical channels using partly orthogonal multiple code trees. A portion of a first code tree is used to spread the physical channels. This first code tree is a combination of a channelization code sequence and a first scrambling code sequence. A portion of a second code tree is used to spread the physical channels that are remaining and were not spread using the first code tree. This second code tree is a combination of the channelization code sequence and a second scrambling code formed by modifying the first scrambling code. The portion of the second code tree used to spread the channels is orthogonal to the portion of the first code tree used. A plurality of other code trees could be formed using scrambling codes based on the modification of the first scrambling code.

    • An apparatus and method for communicating data between at least two data devices, suitable for use as a wireless local-area network, that provides robust data communication via a radio communications channel corrupted by multipath interference, particularly at high data rates. A preferred embodiment of the invention represents data as a sequence of Walsh-function waveforms encoded by pseudo-noise direct-sequence spread-spectrum modulation. Walsh-function-encoding of the data provides a long symbol duration, thereby allowing the spread-spectrum modulation to provide processing gain sufficient to substantially overcome multipath interference, while providing a high data rate. In another preferred embodiment, Walsh-function modulation is supplemented with various forms of phase modulation, such as coherent PSK for bi-orthogonal signalling, and DPSK between orthogonal symbols for noncoherent bi-orthogonal signalling, thereby further increasing data rate without reducing processing gain. In another preferred embodiment, Walsh-function modulation is supplemented with spectral shaping to allow increased bandwidth occupancy, thereby further increasing the processing gain without sacrificing data rate.

    • A spread spectrum CDMA communication system in which a base station communicates with a plurality of subscriber terminals and the base signal transmitted by the base station is comprised of a set of substantially orthogonal functions which are overlaid with a pseudo-noise (PN) sequence forming a coded spreading sequence for an information signal, each orthogonal function of the set carries data for a single user in the system. Information signals are modulated onto the carrier to form a transmit signal and the coded spreading sequence on the transmit signal for broadcasting, each subscriber terminal having a receiver for coherently demodulating the base station signal. A plurality of correlators, each respectively tuned to different functions of the orthogonal signal set, are each followed by an appropriate nonlinearity for removing the data modulation. The summed output of the correlators is used to improve the estimate of carrier phase over that obtained with a single correlator.
