摘要： LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) coded modulation symbol decoding. Symbol decoding is supported by appropriately modifying an LDPC tripartite graph to eliminate the bit nodes thereby generating an LDPC bipartite graph (such that symbol nodes are appropriately mapped directly to check nodes thereby obviating the bit nodes). The edges that communicatively couple the symbol nodes to the check nodes are labeled appropriately to support symbol decoding of the LDPC coded modulation signal. The iterative decoding processing may involve updating the check nodes as well as estimating the symbol sequence and updating the symbol nodes. In some embodiments, an alternative hybrid decoding approach may be performed such that a combination of bit level and symbol level decoding is performed. This LDPC symbol decoding out-performs bit decoding only. In addition, it provides comparable or better performance of bit decoding involving iterative updating of the associated metrics.

摘要： True bit level decoding of TTCM (Turbo Trellis Coded Modulation) of variable rates and signal constellations. A decoding approach is presented that allows for decoding on a bit level basis that allows for discrimination of the individual bits of a symbol. Whereas prior art approaches typically perform decoding on a symbol level basis, this decoding approach allows for an improved approach in which the hard decisions/best estimates may be made individually for each of the individual bits of an information symbol. In addition, the decoding approach allows for a reduction in the total number of calculations that need to be performed as well as the total number of values that need to be stored during the iterative decoding. The bit level decoding approach is also able to decode a signal whose code rate and/or signal constellation type (and mapping) may vary on a symbol by symbol basis.

The execution unit is comprised of interconnected elements that include a programmable butterfly unit, a number of non-programmable butterfly units, a number of data path elements, a look-up table memory, and a reorder memory. The execution unit is capable of engaging in one of a number of operating modes to perform the bit-oriented functions. The operating modes include a programmable mode and a number of fixed operating modes including Viterbi decoding, turbo decoding and variable length encoding and decoding. The data path elements include a programmable shifter and a programmable combiner.

摘要： Variable code rate and signal constellation turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM) codec. A common trellis is employed at both ends of a communication system (in an encoder and decoder) to code and decode data at different rates. The encoding employs a single TTCM encoder whose output bits may be selectively punctured to support multiple modulations (constellations and mappings) according to a rate control sequence. A single TTCM decoder is operable to decode each of the various rates at which the data is encoded by the TTCM encoder. The rate control sequence may include a number of rate controls arranged in a period that is repeated during encoding and decoding. Either one or both of the encoder and decoder may adaptively select a new rate control sequence based on operating conditions of the communication system, such as a change in signal to noise ratio (SNR).

In the Viterbi decoder of the present invention, a branch metric calculation section (101) calculates the branch metrics of all paths from the state of the previous time to the state at the present time, selects the most probable path from the paths arriving at respective states based on the branch metrics (101a) and path metrics (103a) and outputs path select signal (102a) and path metric (102b). Path metric storage section (103) outputs path metric (103a) to be input to ACS calculation section (102) when performing ACS calculating at the next time. Path select signal temporary storage section (104) holds path select signal (102a) of n states, outputs path select signal (104a) of m states (m≦n) and changes a bit input position according to the encoding constraint length or the number of coefficient of deduced estimated transmission path of the system which performs Viterbi decoding.

摘要： TTCM (Turbo Trellis Coded Modulation) decoder design. The design also adapts to any number of devices that perform decoding of Trellis Code Modulation (TCM) signals. After performing initial symbol processing within a data block to generate a number of check point values, the design selectively re-calculates some forward metrics (alphas) and backward metrics (betas), and the design is able to calculate extrinsic (ext) information for each symbol within the data block successively. The data block is subdivided into a number of sub-blocks that are intelligently processed to enable extremely fast processing. Generally speaking, the design performs initial processing starting from both block ends, and upon approaching the block middle, the design begins to process the block using skip backs to previous sub-blocks. The design employs a great deal of parallel and simultaneously processing to provide for very fast computation of the various values required to decode the block.

摘要： A method and apparatus for encoding data for wireless transmission. The invention includes multi-level coding in which data is partitioned between two encoders, one for encoding Most Significant Bits (MSBs) and the other for encoding Least Significant Bits (LSBs). By partition bits separately for the MSBs and LSBs, the complexity of the decoder may be reduced. The MSBs and LSBs are interleaved such that each MSB is a function of just one LSB, simplifying branch metric selection during Viterbi decoding. This also allows parallel de-interleaving by the receiver, which reduces the interleaving latency of the receiver. A block interleaver jointly optimizes the symbol hamming distance of the symbols and the bit hamming distance of each constituent encoder for the MSBs and LSBs.
