    • A filter uses a special autotransformer that has a ferromagnetic core with a plurality of legs and flux return bars. A first coil is located on one leg, and a second coil is located on the same leg, but spaced from the first coil. The first coil and at least part of the second coil are connected in series to receive distorted alternating current and at least that part of the second coil is connected to an output terminal. Between the coils and extending at least part of the way from the first leg to an adjacent leg is a magnetic shunt assembly to divert part of the flux generated in the first coil by the alternating current so that that part does not link with the second coil. An air gap is located to link with the second coil to create an inductor in that coil by flux in the second coil, and a capacitor is connected across the second coil to tune it to the fundamental frequency of the alternating current and substantially reduce harmonics in that current.

    • A harmonic blocking converter system for converting power between an AC source and a DC source includes a harmonic blocking transformer and a converter which generates undesirable harmonic currents including fifth and seventh harmonic components. The harmonic blocking transformer includes a polyphase main transformer and a harmonic blocker coupled with wye and delta secondary windings of the main transformer, so as to substantially block passage of the fifth and seventh harmonic currents to the AC source. A waveform enhancer may couple the harmonic blocking transformer with the converter. The converter may be constructed for 2-level operation, or, with the addition of auxiliary diodes, for 3-level operation. Such a harmonic blocking transformer and a method of blocking undesirable harmonic currents are also provided.

    • A harmonic current filtering transformer includes a three-phase input winding and at least two wye-connected three-phase output windings. Windings for each of the phases includes an in-phase coil connected between a common neutral and vector coils for each of the other two phases, the output windings thereby being phase shifted relative to each other by an amount which causes harmonic currents generated by a non-linear load to magnetically cancel in the transformer core. The harmonic current filtering transformer may be used as part of a harmonic cancelling power system which includes multiple linear and nonlinear loads, and protective devices, switches, filters and other components on both the input and output sides of the transformer as in a conventional power system since the harmonic cancelling transformer does not require additional secondary windings or other electrical components previously thought necessary to achieve harmonic cancellation.

    • A saturated reactor adapted for direct connection to an EHV line and thus constituting a combined reactor and transformer. A problem arises in that earthing of the primary winding star point would normally short circuit the 3rd harmonic. The invention overcomes this by series connection of primary coils coupled to three limbs whose fluxes are spaced at 40.degree.. 3rd harmonic voltages therefore cancel in the series primary windings. The series primary windings may be obtained as separate coils on individual limbs or as one coil (per phase) embracing three limbs. Elimination of the 3rd harmonic enables the ninth harmonic to be short circuited in a mesh winding.
