    • A disk-shaped magnetic recording medium having a reference track and a plurality of data tracks is rotated by a motor which generates an index signal at a predetermined position. A magnetic head is slightly moved in the radial direction of the medium for each predetermined unit distance smaller than the data track width, and a reproduction output amplitude measuring circuit measures the reproduction output amplitude of a signal read from the data track for each index signal. A CPU obtains a position where the amplitude has the maximum value based on the number of head movements and the amplitude at that time so as to control data track positioning. Further, the CPU calculates a relative position between the data track position and the reference track position to perform reference track positioning. The data or reference track positioning of the magnetic head can be performed accurately in a short time.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a head, an actuator arm for actuating the head radially over the disk during a seek operation, and a voice coil motor (VCM) for rotating the actuator arm about a pivot, the VCM comprising a coil comprising a VCM resistance R. A back EMF voltage detector measures a back EMF voltage across the coil, and a current detector detects a current I flowing through the coil. An IR voltage detector, responsive to the current I detected by the current detector, detects an IR voltage proportional to the current I times the VCM resistance R. A voltage compensator substantially cancels the IR voltage from the measured back EMF voltage to generate a compensated back EMF voltage. A control voltage generator, responsive the compensated back EMF voltage, generates a control voltage applied to the coil to generate the current I flowing through the coil. A memory stores a first compensated back EMF voltage generated at a first time period of the seek operation. A comparator compares the first compensated back EMF voltage stored in the memory to a second compensated back EMF voltage generated at a second time period of the seek operation. A calibrator, responsive to the comparator, calibrates the IR voltage detector.

    • An attenuating filter for the servo control processor of a disc drive data storage device. The filter is constructed by determining the peak resonance in the structure frequency response above a preselected magnitude and computing a digital notch filter to attenuate that peak resonance. The notch filter domain is then summed with the structure frequency response to derive a modified structure frequency response. The modified structure frequency response is substituted for the unfiltered structure frequency response and again the peak resonance in the modified structure frequency response above a preselected magnitude is determined and a notch filter is computed as necessary. This process of summing the structure frequency response with the latest computed notch filter domain to derive a modified structure frequency response continues until the peak resonance of the latest modified structure frequency response is less than the preselected magnitude.

    • A method for writing streaming audiovisual data to a disk drive is performed by organizing the data into clusters and commencing writing the clusters to the first physical sector encountered after the read/write head has settled to the desired track on the rotating disk. A cluster contains a number of data blocks corresponding to the number of physical sectors in an integer number of tracks on the disk, so that the writing of a single cluster is the writing to an integer number of full tracks on the disk. Even though the disk drive may have a physical index to identify the first physical sector in all the tracks, the writing of cluster data takes place-without regard to index position. During interleaving of audiovisual data, when multiple recording tasks are cycled until all the tasks are completed, the clusters in the first portion of the first task are written during the first interleave period, the head is then positioned to another track where the clusters in the first portion of the second task are written during the next interleave period, beginning with the first physical sector encountered by the head, again without waiting for index. The location where the first block of cluster data has been written is identified by writing a block number into the physical sector or by writing a start of cluster indicator on the track where the cluster is written.

    • A high-performance head positioning control system composed of a suitable combination of a multi-rate control system and a single-rate control system has been disclosed. An SM judging unit selects the multi-rate control system in a seek operation in which the head is moved to the desired track on the disk. When the head has come close to the desired track and changes from seek control to track following control, the SM judging unit switches from the multi-rate control system to the single-rate control system. The single-rate control system performs track following control whereby the head is positioned in the range of the desired track.

    • A method and apparatus for normalizing the acceleration constant used by a servo control system in a disc drive are disclosed. The method and apparatus involve performing a test seek and summing the position error measured at sample periods during the deceleration phase of the test seek. A correction factor applied to the acceleration constant is adjusted if the sum of the position errors differs from the sum of position errors measured from a nominal seek. Adjusting the correction factor to cause a position error sum that is close or equal to the sum from the nominal seek provides a relatively symmetrical seek arrival without additional correction factor offsets or gain variances.
