    • An apparatus and method is disclosed for inspecting contours formed along a predetermined region of a surface on a workpiece formed of an electrically conductive material using eddy current. A probe includes a longitudinal axis and is moveable along a path of travel to a static testing position stationary with respect to the predetermined region to be inspected on a workpiece. At least two coils are spaced longitudinally from one another and supported by the probe to be electrically excited with a predetermined frequency and amplitude while at the static testing position with the stationary probe. Sensors are provided for measuring the excitation voltage of each coil as eddy currents are induced in the electrically conductive material of the workpiece by the coils supported on the probe stationary at the static testing position with respect to the workpiece. A comparison is performed between the measured eddy current signals from the at least two coils, where a non-zero difference after the coils have encountered the predetermined region to be tested represents an end position of the predetermined region formed on the workpiece being tested.

    • Inductive sensors measure the near surface properties of conducting and magnetic material. A sensor may have primary windings with parallel extended winding segments to impose a spatially periodic magnetic field in a test material. Those extended portions may be formed by adjacent portions of individual drive coils. Sensing elements provided every other half wavelength may be connected together in series while the sensing elements in adjacent half wavelengths are spatially offset. Certain sensors include circular segments which create a circularly symmetric magnetic field that is periodic in the radial direction. Such sensors are particularly adapted to surround fasteners to detect cracks and can be mounted beneath a fastener head. In another sensor, sensing windings are offset along the length of parallel winding segments to provide material measurements over different locations when the circuit is scanned over the test material. The distance from the sensing elements to the ends of the primary winding may be kept constant as the offset space in between sensing elements is varied. An image of the material properties can be provided as the sensor is scanned across the material.

    • An eddy current probe and associated method of inspecting a structure are provided that are capable of generating a two-dimensional image of the structure, generally in real time. The eddy current probe includes an eddy current probe array having a plurality of first and second coils that cross one another to define a plurality of sensing elements. The eddy current probe array may also include a plurality of magnetically permeable core elements located coincident with respective sensing elements and at least partially encircled by respective first and second coils. The eddy current probe may also include an alternating current source electrically connected to the first coils and sense electronics for sensing current induced in the second coils. In operation, the current sensed in the second coils represents at least one characteristic of the structure, such as the electrical conductivity of the structure.

    • A sensor enables simultaneous or sequential eddy current and optical reflectance measurements of conducting film by providing an eddy current inspection coil and a first and a second optical fiber extending axially through the coil. The eddy current inspection coil is excited by a radio frequency generator and induces eddy currents in the conducting film which are sensed using a detector. The conducting film is illuminated by a first optical fiber, and light which is reflected from the conducting film is transmitted by a second optical fiber to a detector. In the case of opaque conducting films, the eddy current sensor measures sheet resistance which is determinative of film thickness. In opaque conducting films, optical reflectance measurements are indicative of characteristics such as grain size and surface oxidation. Eddy current sensing is indicative of sheet resistance which correlates to grain size and film thickness. By providing both optical reflectance and eddy current sensing measurements, conducting film thickness may be accurately determined. Optical reflectance measurements may be used to determine thickness of dielectric films and transparent or semitransparent conducting films directly. The combined use of electrical and optical reflectance signals provides a single probe unit that measures both dielectric and conducting transparent and semi-transparent films.

    • This invention prevents the failure of detection for horizontal and oblique lift-offs in a probe for an eddy current flaw detection test. A plurality of probes are provided, and each probe includes four detection coils. Two adjacent eddy current flaw detecting probes commonly own (share) one of the four coils. The detection coils are connected to a bridge circuit for picking up a flaw signal. The detection coils are adjusted so that interlinkage magnetic fluxes generated inside the detection coils by the eddy current become equal. An excitation coil for inducing the eddy current in a test piece by AC driving can be disposed over the detection coils. The center of the excitation coil is positioned on the center axes of the detection coils. An oscillator for applying an AC current to this excitation coil is connected to the coil.
