    • A control for a press and system for making can ends includes a programmable controller (PLC) which incorporates unique control software interconnecting the PLC and the press mechanisms. The PLC and its software in turn interfaces with a programmable interface device, such as a commercially available Smart Screen interface (SSI) which includes a keyboard and color monitor for operator input/output. The interface includes its own software which interfaces with the PLC software, the keyboard, the monitor, and a programmable CAD package which allows a designer to create and store various interactive and/or passive displays as unique software files related to conditions and operations of the can end making press system coupled to the PLC. A unique set of such programmed displays is disclosed, certain of which are directly interactive with parts and/or transducers fitted to the press and its related tooling. Some displays are continually interactive with the PLC control, others are interactive upon command, and still others are prompt and assist instruction types of display. These displays allow the system operator to operate the system through various set-up, jog, and run modes, maintenance functions, and also to indicate and identify incipient and actual error conditions, and to record data associated with the press operation. Records can be temporary or more permanent, as desired.

    • A hydraulic device is described which operates with an open hydraulic circuit. The device includes a positive-displacement pump for driving hydraulic fluid. An actuation motor having a flywheel is attached to the positive-displacement pump. A tank for hydraulic liquid is connected via a delivery line to the pump. The pump capable of directing hydraulic fluid flow either towards the tank or towards a hydraulic actuation means. The control of flow direction is determined by a first directional control valve means which is connected on the output side of the pump in order to discharge the flow of the positive displacement pump either to the tank or to the hydraulic actuation means. A method for pressing bodies to be processed is also described.

    • A control apparatus provides for automatic programmed sequencing of pressure bumps at precisely determined pressures in a molding press and optionally provides for full pressure or low pressure cure at the conclusion of the bumping operation. The control apparatus comprises a press pressure monitor that measures press clamp pressure and produces an output signal indicative of the measured press pressure, and a control circuit that compares the output signal with a program selected one of a number of reference signals respectively indicative of bump pressures at which a bump may be desired and directs the press to perform a bump upon a predetermined relationship between the output signal and reference signal, such being indicative of the attainment of the bump pressure indicated by the then selected reference signal. Upon completion of the bumping operation, either full or low pressure cure may be effected. For full pressure cure, the control circuit permits press clamp pressure to increase to full pressure which is then maintained during cure. For low pressure cure, the control circuit compares the output voltage of the press pressure monitor to a program selected reference signal indicative of the desired cure pressure and upon a predetermined relationship therebetween indicative of the attainment of such cure pressure, directs the press to maintain such pressure within a prescribed range.
