    • The present invention provides a disposable absorbent article such as an incontinent pad that is both comfortable and suitable for absorbing and containing large volumes of body liquids rapidly without leakage, especially a subsequent gush of liquid. Such an absorbent article comprises a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet, a layered expandable absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet, at least two resilient shaping members, an acquisition channel, a liquid acquisition zone and at least two liquid impervious shelves. The present invention also relates to an absorbent article provided with an expandable overwrap having an expansion means for allowing the overwrap to expand when the absorbent core swells when wetted. The liquid impervious shelves comprise a multiplicity of shelf layers formed from a portion of the backsheet being folded. The liquid impervious shelves channel the flow of liquids toward the lower layers of the absorbent core and encourage use of the bottom and sides of the layers, thereby providing more efficient use of hydrogel materials. An anti-bunching bead may be placed one each liquid impervious shelf between the shelf layers to provide stability to the absorbent article.

    • By a pressure-relieving bandage there is arranged a flexible, non-adhesive, waterproof film (2) between a foam layer (1) and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer (3) containing a hydrocolloid. This will ensure that the expansion of the adhesive by moisture absorption will preferably take place in a direction away from the film (2) and in towards the body. The bandage will therefore not so easily let go of its adhesion to the skin since there is no horizontal displacement of any importance. Moreover, the foam layer is provided with cuts (5) so that large or small sections (6) can be removed from the bandage. The plaster can therefore be used as a pressure-relieving bandage. For prophylactic use it is advantageous to insert a micro-porous tape (7) between the foam layer (1) and the film (2) and to leave out the adhesive layer (3). Instead the underside of the tape (7) and the film (2) is adhesive and protected by a removable protective cover (4).

    • The wound protector comprises a base pad of a pliable fibrous or foamed non-allergenic material in an angular form which may be circular, rectangular, square, oval or triangular. Since the purpose of the wound protector is to prevent the wounded portion of the body from being contacted by anything other than medicants, the central opening of the base pad must be larger than the wounded area about which it is to be placed. A marginal ledge is formed in the top surface of the base pad around the inner opening for the purpose of receiving surgical gauze or sponge containing a medicant, should such be required, for treatment of the wounded area. As the wound protector is to be provided with a transparent cover, the top surface of the base pad between the marginal ledge and the outer vertical surfaces of the pad must be of sufficient width to support the transparent cover as well as provide adequate area for securing at least a part of the cover to the pad. The transparent cover is of a transparent plastic material having some flexibility but lying flat on the upper surface of the base pad when in the normal position. The transparent cover is of the same shape as the base pad and is secured at one side by a permanent adhesive material. While the transparent cover will normally lie flush with the upper surface of the base pad after it is adhered to the pad, a tacky adhesive may be employed on the side of the top surface of the pad opposite the side securing the cover thereto to permit the cover to be lifted up for treatment purposes and then held firmly but releasably to the pad after the treatment. The wound protector is applied to the body area by a non-allergenic adhesive material.
