    • A method and apparatus for spinning, drawing, and winding a synthetic filament yarn, wherein the yarn is subjected during its drawing in a draw zone to a multi-stage heat treatment by heated surfaces. In the first heat treatment, the yarn is heated to the range of the glass transition temperature of the yarn material, and the yarn is guided over the heating surface while partially looping thereabout. The second stage of the heat treatment is formed by an elongate heating surface, and at least one of the heating surfaces is heated to a surface temperature above the melt point of the yarn material. In the draw zone, the yarn is subjected to a tension, which is necessary for a plastic deformation in or directly downstream of the first stage of the heat treatment. In this process, the yarn is drawn and set.

    • A yarn false twist crimping machine which comprises a processing frame which mounts the yarn processing components, a creel for mounting the yarn packages, and a take-up frame which is laterally spaced from the processing frame on the side thereof opposite the creel so as to define an operator aisle therebetween. An elongate heater is mounted to the take-up frame and an elongate cooling plate is mounted to the processing frame, and a false twist unit is mounted to the processing frame below the outlet end of the cooling plate. The yarn is guided from the creel in a generally planar arrangement across the operator aisle and to a first yarn feed system which is mounted on the take-up frame. The yarn then advances through the heater and cooling plate to the false twist unit and so as to loop back through the plane defined by the yarns being fed from the creel. Two such machines may be mounted in a mirror image relationship so as to define a service aisle which is bordered by the take-up frames of the two machines, thereby providing for the efficient servicing of the take-up devices of the two machines.

    • A method and apparatus for winding textile yarns into core supported packages is disclosed, and which is characterized by the ability to produce relatively large packages which are adapted to permit a high speed unwinding by withdrawal of the yarn over one end of the package. The method and apparatus involves controlling the yarn traverse guide so as to include stroke modification cycles during which the traverse stroke is progressively contracted and then increased, with the stroke modification cycles being designed to produce a precisely cylindrical package end with a uniform distribution of hardness along the package. In one illustrated embodiment, a number of stroke modification cycles having a relatively large contraction alternate with a number of stroke modification cycles having a relatively small contraction. In addition, the speed of the yarn guide may be constantly accelerated and decelerated to avoid undesirable patterns, with the changes in speed being coordinated with the stroke modification cycles to provide a uniform yarn tension in the package.

    • A pneumatic sensor is provided for detecting and indicating the tension in running strand material, such as yarn, wire and the like. A source of compressed air is connected to an air escape nozzle having an outlet opening in one end thereof and a closing member is supported adjacent the outlet opening and is normally spaced a predetermined distance from the outlet opening to regulate and partially restrict the escape of air therefrom. The strand engages the closing member and varies the space or gap between the closing member and the nozzle outlet in accordance with the amount of tension in the strand. A pressure gauge is provided for indicating the amount of air pressure in the pneumatic pressure system and for thereby indicating the amount of tension in the running strand. A pressure/electric transducer is operable by the pneumatic pressure system and may operate a control system for a variable speed motor in a yarn take-up system to vary the takeup rate to maintain a predetermined tension on the yarn being taken up. The variation in air pressure in the pneumatic pressure system may also be utilized to operate a pneumatic cylinder for varying the braking force applied to a wire let-off beam in an unwinding operation so that the tension in the wire is maintained within a predetermined tension range.

    • A bobbin changing apparatus is provided which is adapted for use in association with a textile yarn processing machine having a plurality of winding stations, and wherein the apparatus comprises a thread operating carriage and a separate doffing carriage, which are mounted for independent movement on a common trackway. The thread operating carriage acts to sever and withdraw the advancing yarn during the bobbin changing operation, and upon an empty bobbin being mounted at the winding station, to then deliver the yarn to the automatic thread-up mechanism on the winding head of the machine. The doffing carriage includes a mandrel for receiving the full bobbins, and since the doffing carriage is independent of the thread operating carriage, the doffing carriage is free to immediately move from the winding station to deliver the full bobbin to a separate creel, or to perform a quality control analysis of the full bobbin. The thread operating carriage preferably carries a supply of empty bobbins, and includes a mechanism for donning the empty bobbins after the doffing operations have been completed by the doffing carriage.
