    • A diffractive optical element emits substantially zero order diffracted light when light with a wavelength of 0.35 μm to 0.45 μm is incident and emits substantially first-order diffracted light when light with a wavelength of 0.6 μm to 0.7 μm is incident. The diffractive optical element includes a substrate and a grating portion formed on the substrate. The grating portion has a step-wise cross section with any one of levels selected from four levels, five levels and six levels. The diffractive optical element emits substantially zero-order diffracted light when light with a first wavelength λ1 satisfying the relationship: 0.35 μm≦λ1≦0.45 μm is incident and emits substantially first-order diffracted light when light with a second wavelength λ2 satisfying the relationship: 0.6 μm≦λ2≦0.7 μm is incident.

    • An optical head according to the present invention includes: a first light source for emitting light with a first wavelength; a second light source for emitting light with a second wavelength longer than the first wavelength; and an objective lens for focusing the lights with the first and second wavelengths on information recording surfaces of information recording media corresponding to the lights with the respective wavelengths. The objective lens is designed so as to reduce aberration with respect to the light with the first wavelength. An optical-path length from the second light source to the objective lens is allowed to be shorter than that from the first light source to the objective lens so that aberration caused by the objective lens due to chromatic dispersion caused by a material of the objective lens is reduced with respect to the light with the second wavelength. Thus, using a common optical system, recording and/or reproduction can be carried out with respect to the respective information recording media corresponding to the first and second wavelengths. Furthermore, since the common optical system can be used, the optical head can be simplified in configuration and can be reduced in size.

    • An information recording medium of the present invention is an information recording medium characterized by and including a substrate; and a recording unit capable of recording three-dimensionally a recording pit on the substrate; in which the recording unit has n number of recording layers (n is an integer equal to or larger than 4) and a plurality of intermediate layers laminated with the recording layers one on another; the recording is performed by the condensed recording light using a two photon absorption phenomenon; each of the plurality of intermediate layers is substantially transparent at a wavelength λ1 of the recording light and at a wavelength λ2 of the reproduction light, respectively; the light intensity of the recording light incident into the recording layer nearest to the substrate is more than 0.707 fold as much as the light intensity of the recording light incident into the recording layer farthest from the substrate.
