    • A machine for grinding a cylindrical surface and the end surface of a shoulder portion, both formed on a workpiece, using an angular grinding wheel. The end surface is perpendicular to the cylindrical surface. The grinding wheel has a first outer surface parallel to the axis of the workpiece and a second outer surface perpendicular to the first outer surface. The first outer surface has a cylinder-grinding parallel surface and a cylinder-grinding tilted surface. The parallel surface has a generatrix parallel to the generatrix of the cylindrical surface to be ground. The tilted surface is continuous with the parallel surface and has a generatrix tilted away from the generatrix of the cylindrical surface. The second outer surface has a shoulder-grinding parallel surface and a shoulder-grinding tilted surface continuous with this parallel surface. The shoulder-grinding parallel surface has a generatrix parallel to the end surface of the shoulder portion. The shoulder-grinding tilted surface has a generatrix tilted away from the end surface of the shoulder portion. The grinding wheel is fed into the shoulder portion from a given position located radially inside the end surface. Then, the wheel is moved radially outwardly to grind the end surface. Subsequently, the wheel is moved relative to the workpiece along the generatrix of the cylindrical surface away from the end surface to grind the cylindrical surface.

    • A magneto-optical recording medium having a magnetic film having magnetization normal to a plane thereof and having a number of prepits preformed in an optically detectable form at a predetermined interval along a track is prepared. Areas between the prepits are defined as recording areas in which data is to be recorded. A clock signal having a predetermined frequency is generated in synchronism with a reproduced signal corresponding to the prepits of the magneto-optical record medium in response to the reproduced signal. A radiation pulse having an energy corresponding to a signal having a predetermined pattern is irradiated to the magneto-optical record medium in accordance with the clock signal to record the predetermined pattern in at least one of the recording areas prior to code data to be recorded. A phase difference (.delta..sub.2) between the reproduced signal corresponding to the recorded predetermined pattern and the clock signal is detected and a difference (.delta..sub.1 -.delta..sub.2) between the phase difference (.delta..sub.2) and a phase difference (.delta..sub.1) between the reproduced signal corresponding to the signal recorded in the recording area and the clock signal is detected. The clock signal is corrected in accordance with the detected difference.

    • A guard device for a grinding wheel in a grinding machine comprises a side guard plate pivotably mounted upon a guard body for covering one side face of the grinding wheel. A front cover member is slidably mounted upon the top portion of the guard body for covering the upper front portion of the grinding wheel. A latch member is mounted on the front cover member to be engaged with a saw-toothed member so as to restrict movement of the front cover member away from the periphery of the grinding wheel but to allow movement of the front cover member toward the periphery of the grinding wheel. A locking member is pivotably mounted on the top of the guard body to lock the side guard plate in a closed state. When the locking member is pivoted to be disengaged from the side guard plate, the saw-toothed member is also disengaged from the latch member.

    • A magneto-optical recording medium and a method for recording and reproduction thereon are provided in order to reproduce information recorded by multi-valued recording at a high S/N ratio. Disclosed is a magneto-optical recording medium including two magnetic layers capable of four-valued recording based on four combined magnetization states. Magnitudes of reproduction signals concerning the four magnetization states, obtained upon reproduction at a wavelength λ1, are different from those obtained upon reproduction at a wavelength λ2. The two magnetic layers, on which a signal (a) is recorded, are irradiated with light beams having the wavelengths λ1 and λ2 respectively. Signals (d), (e) reproduced from respective reflected light beams are sliced by using at least one slice level to obtain two-valued or higher multi-valued reproduction signals respectively. The two-valued or higher multi-valued reproduction signals (f), (g) from the respective wavelengths are mutually subjected to logical operation to reproduce recorded information (i).
