    • A nuclear reactor including, in the upper internals, a guide structure capable of effectively accommodating and guiding without binding the large number of neutron-absorber rods included in modern reactors of improved efficiency. The neutron-absorber rods include control rods, gray rods, and water-displacement rods. All rods are suspended in clusters from spiders or vanes. The upper internals of the reactor includes cruciform guides for the control-rod and gray-rod clusters. Each of these guides is composed of a plurality of vertical guide sections of transverse cruciform cross section. Plates extending throughout the cross-section of the reactor are supported between each pair of successive guide sections. The plates are perforated, the perforations in each plate being patterned to pass the water-displacement rod clusters. The plates are oriented so that the patterned perforations are aligned to serve as guides for the water-displacement rod clusters. The plates are of very large diameter and, as perforated, would not be self-supporting unless they were very thick. To overcome this drawback, each plate is formed of separate plate sections which are, when assembled nested together, like the parts of a "jig-saw puzzle".

    • An apparatus for moving and positioning a tool for plugging a defective heat exchanger tube of a steam generator in a nuclear reactor includes a base, a plug magazine supported on the base, a guidance mechanism mounting the plugging tool and a positioning mechanism supported on the base and mounting the guidance mechanism. The guidance mechanism is operable to align and position the tool relative to the plug magazine and the defective heat exchanger tube to correspondingly effect, upon operation of the tool, plug loading when the tool is located in a plug dispensing position adjacent to the plug magazine and plug unloading when the tool is located in a plug applying position adjacent to the defective tube. The positioning mechanism is operable to assume folded and unfolded conditions to transfer the guidance mechanism and the plugging tool therewith respectively between the plug dispensing and applying positions. The guidance mechanism employs a remote center compliance device in the form of a plurality of laminated elastomer and metal shim elements which extend between and connect the plugging tool and a guide fixture of the guidance mechanism. Also, the compliance device is operable to correct lateral and angular misalignments of the tool with the plug magazine and the defective tube as the guidance mechanism is moved toward same when disposed at the respective plug dispensing and applying positions. Further, the positioning mechanism employs an articulated linkage which is moved in sissor-like fashion between the folded and unfolded conditions for respectively moving the guidance mechanism and plugging tool therewith between the plug dispensing and applying positions.

    • A method of uniformly rotopeening the inside walls of metallic tubes to a desired final peening intensity by means of at least one rotatable peening flapper is disclosed herein. The method generally comprises the step of simultaneously rotating and orbiting the flapper within the tube while maintaining a selected stand-off distance between the inner edge of the flapper and the inside wall of the tube. The angular speed of the flapper and the stand-off distance are selected so that the slope of the curve defined by peening intensity over time is substantially flat in the vicinity of the desired final peening intensity. The method is particularly useful in uniformly and accurately peening the inside walls of the heat exchange tubes anchored in the tubesheet of a nuclear steam generator in order to relieve tensile stresses in the walls of these tubes which might otherwise lead to stress corrosion cracking in the tube walls.

    • The submersible propulsor unit of the invention comprises a cylindrical shroud having a water inlet and a water outlet, a propeller having a hub rotatably mounted within the shroud on a shaft, and an electric motor for driving the propeller that includes a rotor mounted around the periphery of the propeller, and a stator circumscribing the shroud, and a bearing assembly that includes means for circulating ambient water around the bearing surfaces to both lubricate and cool them. A stationary cover is detachably secured over the bearing assembly on the water inlet end of the shaft to provide easy access to the bearings in the bearing assembly The vane members that concentrically mount the shaft within the interior of the shroud are, in one embodiment, all connected on the downstream side of the propeller to reduce the cavitation and resulting noise when the propeller rotates. The magnetization of the rotor is provided by a plurality of permanent magnets for both improved efficiency, and lower noise. A squirrel cage structure formed from damper bars and conductive wedges is integrated over the magnets of the rotor both to assist in the starting of the motor, as well as to insulate the magnets from harmonic currents that could act to de-magnetize them. In one embodiment, the propulsor unit has a single propeller driven by two identical side-by-side motor assemblies. This arrangement provides added reliability while retaining mechanical simplicity and low cost and weight as compared with a multipropeller propulsor unit.

    • A high-thrust, shock-resistant submersible propulsor unit comprises of a shroud having a water inlet and a water outlet, a shaft assembly centrally mounted within the shroud, and an upstream and a downstream propeller, each of which includes a separate hub rotatably mounted on the shaft assembly, first and second electric motors for independently rotating the upstream and the downstream propellers, wherein each motor includes a rotor mounted around the outer periphery of one of the propellers, and a stator mounted on the shroud around the rotor, and first and second bearing assemblies, each of which includes a thrust bearing disposed within the hubs of the upstream and downstream propellers in the shaft assembly, wherein the thrust bearings associated with the first and second bearing assemblies are located on opposite ends of the shaft assembly. Each of the bearing assemblies includes a removable cover which affords easy and separate access to the bearing contained in each. The pitch of the upstream and downstream propellers is different so that they may be counter-rotated to produce torque free thrust. In the preferred mode of operation, the propellers are rotated at different speeds such that the upstream propeller supercharges the downstream propeller.
