    • An engine starter apparatus comprising first and second noncircular gears, a pinion, and a starter motor. The pair of noncircular gears is interposed between a crankshaft and a ring gear of an engine, and when the speed of rotation of the first noncircular gear is kept constant, the second noncircular gear rotates the crankshaft while cyclically causing a change in the angular velocity due to its profile. Since the second noncircular gear is positioned so that the change in the angular velocity caused by its rotation can cancel a change in torque of the crankshaft, the change in the torque of the engine are not transmitted to the starter motor, thereby operating the starter motor at constant current at all times, providing such additional advantages as smaller and lighter starter motor design and reduced noise.

    • A moisture drain bush for use in a moisture drain hole in an engine starter motor housing wall comprises a stem having an inner and an outer end and an axial length equal to a housing wall thickness and having an axial groove extending between the inner and the outer ends of the stem. An inner flange has a flat inner surface radially extending from the inner end of the stem and larger than the drain hole is provided. The inner flange also has an inner radial groove connected at its inner end to the inner end of the axial groove in the stem and radially extending therefrom to open at the outer periphery of the inner flange. An outer flange having a flat inner surface radially extends from the outer end of the stem and larger than the drain hole is provided. The outer flange has an outer radial groove extending across the outer flange to open at the outer periphery of the outer flange at substantially diametrically opposite positions, the outer radial groove being connected to the outer end of the axial groove. Thus, when the drain bush is inserted within the drain hole in the motor housing, the axial groove and the inner and the outer radial grooves as well as the drain hole together define a continuous but bent moisture drain path extending through the housing wall and a substantially straight path substantially along the housing wall.

    • An engine starter motor comprising a d.c. motor having an armature rotary shaft 7 an over-running clutch 31 slidably mounted on the armature rotary shaft between a forward position and a rearward position and including a clutch inner cylinder 32, and a pinion 33 mounted on the clutch inner cylinder. In order to energize the d.c. motor and slide the over-running clutch together with the pinion between the forward and rearward positions, a solenoid switch 15 and a shift lever 34 are provided. The shift lever comprises a main body 34a, a first end portion 34b operatively coupled to the solenoid switch and a second end poriton operatively coupled to the over-running clutch. The second end of the shift lever is bifurcated into two tines 34e and each of the tines is provided with a forward extension 344 forwardly extending substantially parallel to the rotary shaft and an inwardly extending engagement projection 34g for engagement with the over-running clutch. The axial length of the forward extension is such that the engagement projection on the forward extension engages the clutch inner cylinder at a point forwardly remote from the main body of the shift lever by a distance substantially corresponding to the axial length component of the forward extension, whereby the clutch inner cylinder has an axial dimension decreased by a distance substantially equal to the axial length component of the forward extension.
