    • Systems, control subsystems, and methods for projecting an electron beam onto a specimen are provided. One system includes a stage configured to move the specimen with a non-uniform velocity. The system also includes a projection subsystem configured to project the electron beam onto the specimen while the stage is moving the specimen at the non-uniform velocity. In addition, the system includes a control subsystem configured to alter one or more characteristics of the electron beam while the projection subsystem is projecting the electron beam onto the specimen based on the non-uniform velocity. One method includes moving the specimen with a non-uniform velocity and projecting the electron beam onto the specimen during movement of the specimen. In addition, the method includes altering one or more characteristics of the electron beam during projection of the electron beam onto the specimen based on the non-uniform velocity.

    • A device for direct or indirect application of a liquid or viscous coating medium onto a moving material web, specifically a paper or cardboard web, includes an applicator unit which, in the direct application method, applies the coating medium in the form of a coating layer directly onto the material web at a point of application. In the indirect application method, the coating medium is first applied onto an applicator element, for example an applicator roll, which then transfers, at the point of application, the coating medium to the material web in the form of a coating layer. In addition, a drying device for drying of the coating layer is provided downstream from the point of application, viewed in the direction of flow of the material web. In the applicator unit, a device for moistening and/or warming the material web, coating medium or the coating layer is additionally provided before the drying device, viewed in the flow direction of the material web.

    • A doctoring device for an apparatus designed to apply a liquid or viscid medium onto a moving base surface includes a metering unit having a coater rod and a coater rod bed. The metering unit is attached to the support beam and is positioned so that it can be pressed against the base surface. A pressure-elastic support arrangement is disposed between the coater beam and the coater rod bed. The coater rod bed is supported pressure-elastically by the support beam via the support arrangement in at least two support directions that are perpendicular to each other. The spring rate of the support arrangement is adjustable in at least one of the support directions. A preferred support arrangement includes pressure hoses which are assigned to each of the two support directions. The pressures in these hoses can be adjusted, independently from each other, to a pre-determined level via a pressure source. Unwanted deformation of the support beam in various directions relative to the base surface can thereby be compensated for. Furthermore, there is a large degree of freedom in the selection of the mounting position of the doctoring device relative to the base surface.

    • The calendering occurs in a press nip of a calender with application of pressure, moisture and heat. To achieve a desired surface quality, the surface of the paper or cardboard web which is to be calendered is brought in the press nip to a condition above the glass transition curve of the materials. Prior to expiration of 20 to 60 milliseconds, the surface of the paper web departing from the press nip is subjected to a transition step by virtue of a cooling device first in combination with a change in moisture content to a condition beneath the glass transition point of the material. The cooling can occur during contact of the surface to be cooled with a cooled surface or by direct contact with a cooling, preferably inert gas. After calendering there thus arises a diminished increase in the roughness of the paper web, so that the surface quality obtained in the press nip is predominantly retained. There have been illustrated suitable apparatuses for carrying out the method.
