    • An apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) and a container (16) which contains a source of inflation fluid. A valve (30) is located outside the container (16) in an inflation fluid flow path extending from the container (16) to the protection device (14). An initiator (20) is actuatable to initiate a flow of the inflation fluid from the container (16) to the valve (30) along the flow path. The valve (30) includes a metering member (70) and a thermostatic metal element (72). The thermostatic metal element (72) engages the metering member (70) to move the metering member (70) in the flow path under the influence of changes in the ambient temperature prior to initiation of the flow of inflation fluid from the container (16) to the valve (30).

    • An apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) which is deployable into engagement with a vehicle occupant. The apparatus (14) further includes a source (16) of inflation fluid and a device (62) that is actuatable to regulate a flow of the inflation fluid from the source (16) to the protection device (14). A cover structure (40) is configured to cover the protection device (14) at a location that is spaced from the occupant when the occupant is not out-of-position. A sensor (50) senses a force (F) applied to the cover structure (40) by the occupant when the occupant is out-of-position. A controller (64) responds to the sensor (50) by controlling the actuatable device (62) with reference to the force (F) applied to the cover structure (40) by the out-of-position occupant.

    • An apparatus (10) for inflating an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint (12) includes a collision sensor (52) and an inflator assembly (20). The collision sensor (52) provides a collision signal indicating the occurrence of a vehicle collision. The inflator assembly (20) includes a first source (22) of inflation fluid which, when actuated, provides a first volume of inflation fluid. The inflator assembly (20) further includes a second source (24) of inflation fluid which, when actuated, provides a second volume of inflation fluid which differs from the first volume. A position sensor (70) provides a position signal indicating a position of an occupant of the vehicle. A controller (50) actuates the first and second sources (22, 24) of inflation fluid in any one of a plurality of differing modes of operation in response to the collision signal and the position signal.

The solenoid valve (24) normally has an open condition providing an initial outlet flow area. The apparatus (10) responds to a vehicle crash by controlling the solenoid valve (24) in a selected one of a plurality of differing stages corresponding to a plurality of differing conditions. The different stages include a stage in which the solenoid valve (24) is not shifted from the open condition, and further include a stage in which the solenoid valve (24) is shifted to a further opened condition providing a subsequent outlet flow area greater than the initial outlet flow area.
