    • A multi-sided radio (200) includes an audio centric side (210) including a speaker (208) operationally independent of functions on an opposing side, a data centric side (220) on the opposing side of the audio centric side, and a top controller side (250) having at least one control function (202 or 204). The audio centric side can include an option module (242) for placement as an insert enabling additional functions including camera functions, environmental sensors, WLAN transceivers, audio upgrades, and bar code readers as examples. The data centric side can include a keypad (214 and 216) and a display (218). The speaker can reside behind the display of the data centric side and has full porting out of the audio centric side.

    • A rotary control assembly (200) for a handheld two-way radio (100) provides improved tactile feedback in the form of clicks, even during gloved usage. Assembly (200) includes a housing having a large control knob (108), a rotary switch control (202) having a shaft (204), a shaft extender (206) having a toothed gear element (210), and a ball plunger (302). As the control knob (108) is rotated, the shaft extender (206), toothed gear element (210) and shaft (204), all turn in cooperation. The toothed gear element (210) is loaded by the ball plunger thereby generating a clicking tactile feedback in response to the control knob (108) being rotated. A large control knob (108), suitable for a ruggedized environment, can thus be used in conjunction with a small rotary switch control (202) for improved tactile feedback while maximizing internal space efficiency.

    • A control assembly (400, 500, 600) for a communication device includes a housing having a light permeable portion (406, 506, 606), along with a rotary control formed of a shaft (408), a knob (508) or belt (608) each having a surface, and a light shining light through the light permeable portion onto the surface. Light sensitive motion detection circuitry (402, 502, 602) detects movement of the surface through the light permeable portion (406, 506, 606). The control can be implemented in high profile, low profile, scroll and slider bar embodiments, all providing a sealed environment to the communication device.
