    • A gap film of a write element is provided between a first pole portion and a second pole portion. The second pole portion includes a third magnetic film and a fourth magnetic film. The third magnetic film is provided adjacent to the gap film and the fourth magnetic film is provided adjacent to the third magnetic film. The surface of the fourth magnetic film facing opposite the medium includes a first side adjacent to the third magnetic film and a second sides extending outward from the first side. The second sides each inclines toward the opposite side from the third magnetic film at an angle of less than 90° relative to an extended line of the first side to eliminate recording bleed occurring due to leaked magnetic field.

    • The present invention relates to a thin film magnetic head that achieves low NLTS and demonstrates outstanding O/W characteristics in a high frequency range. A first magnetic film and a second magnetic film face opposite each other over a gap film at a side where a surface facing opposite the medium is present. A first yoke and a second yoke, which extend rearward on the opposite side from the surface facing opposite the medium, are linked to each other at a rear linking portion. A coil film, which is supported by an insulating film, is provided in a coil around the rear linking portion. N/YL.gtoreq.0.2 (turns/.mu.m) is satisfied, with YL (.mu.m) representing the distance from the surface facing opposite the medium to the rear linking portion and N (turns) representing the number of turns of the coil film.

    • The present invention is directed to prevention of breakdown caused by electrostatic discharge in an MR element. An MR element constitutes a read element. A head support device 2 supports a magnetic head 1. A lead wire 3 is constituted with at least a pair of lead wires 31 and 32 and each of the pair of lead wires 31 and 32 is connected to the read element at one end. A terminal board 5 is provided with at least one pair of terminal conductors 52 and 53 on top of a hard substrate 51. The pair of terminal conductors 52 and 53 are provided with connecting areas 54 and 55 respectively on the same side, to which one end of which are connected the other ends of the lead wires 31 and 32 respectively. The pair of terminal conductors 52 and 53 are electrically shorted from each other by a shorting portion 56 at a rearward position which is away from the connecting areas 54 and 55 over a distance. The substrate 51 is provided with grooves or perforations 57 which facilitate the cutting operation between the shorting portion 56 and the connecting areas 54 and 55.

    • A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus having a magnetic disk, a magnetic head and a magnetic head supporting device. The surface roughness R.sub.max of the magnetic disk is at most 10 nm, and the magnetic head has a slider on which reading and writing elements are mounted. The slider is of a generally rectangular prism shape with the entire area of a medium opposing surface which opposes the magnetic disk being flat. The surface area of the medium opposing surface is 2 mm.sup.2 or less. The apparatus has a first relative speed at which the frictional coefficient between the magnetic disk and the magnetic head is changed from a high value to a low value when the speed increases, and a second relative speed at which the frictional coefficient is changed from a low value to a high value when the speed decreases. A ridge portion between the front surface and the medium opposing surface has a round corner, wherein the length of the round corner in the direction of the medium opposing surface is larger than the length of the round corner in the direction of the front surface.
