    • A laser apparatus comprises a beam distributor to distribute a pumping beam over a laser medium. The beam distributor comprises a beam conductor having an incident surface and an intermediate surface smaller than the incident surface. The beam conductor conducts the pumping beam received by the incident surface to the intermediate surface. A main body is connected to the intermediate surface and has a plurality of surfaces and confines the pumping beam introduced through the intermediate surface by repeating total internal reflection at the surfaces. When the intermediate surface becomes small, quantity of the pumping beam escaping from the intermediate surface becomes small. The main body distributes the pumping beam confined therein over the laser medium where the laser medium is in contact with the surfaces of the main body.

    • A multitype characters processing method and terminal device is used to process code data representing characters belonging to any one of a plurality of character sets, there being characters common to each set. One of the sets is specified as the main set and the others are specified as subsets. Sequentially received data are stored in a first display buffer, and are then processed to determine whether they are common character code data. If they are common character code data, they are processed as the main set character code data; if they are not common character code data, they are processed by referring to a character set related to the data previously processed. Processed data results are stored in a second display buffer. In accordance with the invention, the operator may select either the first display buffer so as to display the received data or the second display buffer to display the processed data results.

    • A fiber optical device 1A includes an amplification optical fiber 10, a seed light source 15 for supplying pulse seed light to the optical fiber 10, excitation light sources 21 to 25 for supplying excitation light, a bleaching light source 40 for supplying bleaching light for reducing a light transmission loss caused by photodarkening, and a control device 50 that controls the operations of individual portions. The control device 50 divides a period between a first output light pulse and a succeeding second output light pulse into a first period which includes a time point immediately after the output of the first output light pulse and during which the population inversion is unsaturated, and a second period which includes a time point immediately before the output of the second output light pulse, and, to the optical fiber 10, supplies the bleaching light in the first period and supplies the excitation light in the second period. Thus, it is possible to provide a fiber optical device and the method of driving it that can suitably restore the characteristics of the amplification optical fiber by photobleaching.
