    • In accordance with the present invention, an impulse generator of high portability is provided using a pair of guillotinized, separately activated hammer/anvil sub-assemblies. Since each sub-assembly is horizontal positioned, say in contact with the earth from a position below the wheel of an exploration truck, the equivalent of the "flying blade" of a guillotine, i.e., a weighted hammer element, must be provided with horizontal movement. This is done by tensioning a plurality of springs attached between the hammer element and a rectangular main frame.During cocking and release of the hammer, the explorationist is provided with a series of visual signals in the form of deactivated and activated panel lights. These signals are automatically provided by controller means of the present invention. Release of the cocked hammer, however, is operator controlled for safety reasons say by activation of a latching means attached to the main frame of the assembly.

    • A method and apparatus for improving the power output of a seismic vibrator are provided. Compliant elements with variable stiffnesses are interposed between and connected to the holddown mass and the baseplate. When the compliant elements have a first stiffness, the vibrator-earth system has a first resonant frequency. When the compliant elements have a second stiffness, the vibrator-earth system has a second resonant frequency. During sweep, the compliant elements are set on the first stiffness until the vibrator has passed through the first resonant frequency; then the compliant elements are changed to their second stiffness and the sweep continues through the second resonant frequency.

    • A high pressure seal is formed between a stationary piston and a reciprocating cylinder. The seal includes a sleeve which has an inner diameter dimensioned to permit the cylinder to slide freely over the piston rod, the sleeve being in rigid contact at one end to the cylinder and the other end to an end plate surrounding the piston and closing the end of the sleeve. A bleeder port communicates with the outer surface of the piston rod, through the piston rod, and terminates at a low pressure supply. Bleeder grooves are formed around the inner wall of the sleeve. A first bleeder groove is positioned in the inner wall of the sleeve at the mid-stroke position of the piston with second and third bleeder grooves positioned at each extreme position of the piston stroke in the inner wall of the sleeve. A plurality of pressure drop grooves is formed along the inner sleeve diameter such that the hydraulic fluid passing from the cylinder into the sleeve will gradually drop in pressure as it moves toward the end plate. Pressure relief at the end plate seal is provided by the hydraulic fluid accumulating in the bleeder grooves where it is removed through the bleeder port.
