    • A pneumatically operated fastener driving tool capable of reducing a time period from operation timing of a trigger to downward movement of a driver blade for fastener driving, and reducing a time period from the release timing of the trigger to a timing at which respective components are returned to their initial positions for a subsequent nail driving. As components a main valve and a trigger valve is provided. The main valve is movable within a main valve chamber connected to a main valve control channel. The trigger valve selectively provides fluid communication between the accumulator and a main valve chamber through the main valve control channel and between the main valve chamber and the atmosphere through the main valve control channel. A ratio of cross-sectional area of the main valve control channel to an internal volume of the main valve chamber is defined to a specified ratio.

    • A hydraulic actuator has a housing, a piston drive chamber in the housing, a fluid inlet into the chamber, and a piston reciprocable in the drive chamber. The piston has diametrical steps exposed to fluid under pressure to cycle the piston. A sleeve spaced from and surrounds over a length of the piston to define a return chamber therebetween. The housing has first and second seats. The first seat and a first surface of the sleeve define an exhaust valve, which has an exhaust port, for the return chamber. The exhaust port is opened and closed by reciprocating the sleeve. The second seat and a second surface of the sleeve an inlet valve for the return chamber. Reciprocating the sleeve opens and closes the return chamber to the drive chamber. The housing also has a bore through which a portion of the sleeve reciprocates to close the exhaust valve and seal the drive chamber. The piston and the sleeve are configured so that they interact hydraulically during cycling to generate hydraulic pressure changes in the return chamber. This reciprocates the sleeve between the exhaust valve and the return chamber inlet valve to cycle the piston. The piston/sleeve configuration also hydraulically cushions the piston as it travels toward the exhaust valve.

    • An electrically driven hermetic compressor comprises a hermetic casing, an electric motor unit encased in the casing, and a compression mechanism encased by the casing and drivingly connected to the electric motor unit through a crankshaft. The compression mechanism includes a cylinder, a piston reciprocatingly slidable in the cylinder, a valve plate having formed therein a suction port and a discharge port and providing valve seats around the ports, suction valve and a discharge valve cooperating with the suction and discharge ports. The cylinder, the piston and the valve plate cooperate to define a compression chamber. The compressor further has a passage system providing separate passages for a gas to be compressed and the gas after compression, and a motion converting mechanism for converting rotary motion of the crankshaft into linear reciprocating motion of the piston. A frusto-conical projection is formed on the top of the piston at a point offset from the axis of the piston so as to be receivable in the discharge port which also is offset from the axis of the piston, thus minimizing dead volume when the piston has reached its top dead center of its stroke.

    • An on-off valve is provided for a rockdrill which is operable by a hydraulic fluid under pressure and which is controlled by a hydraulically biassed valve. The rockdrill is turned on and off by opening and closing the on-off valve. When the valve is turned off hydraulic pressure from an inlet line and a supply pin line to a valve line of the hydraulically biassed control valve is cut off, thereby eliminating the pressure on the supply pin. This interrupts the operating cycle of the control valve and thereby shuts off the operation of the hydraulic drill. When the on-off valve is opened the hydraulic pressure from the inlet line via the supply pin line is re-established to the valve line and to the supply pin, and the operating cycle of the control valve is re-established.

    • A uniflow engine has a plurality of cylinders disposed symmetrically around a common crankshaft connected to pistons reciprocating in the cylinders. In response to the availability of a working fluid vapor at a predetermined condition, such as a high pressure or temperature, incoming vapor is supplied to those cylinders in which the respective pistons are in their working strokes to thereby initiate rotation of the crankshaft in a predetermined direction regardless of the position in which the crankshaft has stopped last. Once rotation is initiated and a predetermined mode change speed attained in a "start-up mode" by engine operation from start, vapor inlet valves are controlled to change engine operation over to a "running mode". In the "start-up mode" incoming vapor is admitted over a substantial portion of the piston working stroke, whereas in the "running mode" vapor inflow is terminated relatively early in the working stroke so that a vapor change does work in expanding against the piston. A relief valve is provided in the head portion of each piston and is actuated by inertia forces to facilitate evacuation of exhausted working fluid vapor from the corresponding cylinder.
