    • A door braking device for the door of a vehicle, in particular a truck, includes a bar movable between an extended position in which the door is fully opened, and a retracted position in which the door is closed, and a brake surface being biased towards the movable bar by a spring member providing a recoil force being proportional to a recoil length of the spring member, such that the brake surface exerts a brake force on the movable bar for braking a movement of the door. At least one link member is pivotably arranged to transmit the recoil force from the spring member to the brake surface, wherein the link member has at least a minimum pivotal position corresponding to a minimum contribution to the recoil length of the spring, and a maximum pivotal position corresponding to a maximum contribution to the recoil length of the spring being greater than said minimum contribution to the recoil length, the minimum and maximum contributions to the recoil length resulting in a minimum and a maximum contribution to the resulting brake force, respectively.

    • A piston-cylinder unit includes a piston which divides the cylinder into two working chambers, a sealing valve seals a flow path between the two working chambers in the stationary operating condition of the unit. The sealing valve has a valve element consisting of an axially movable radially sealing sealing ring in conjunction with a valve ring, which at its back is supported by a spring-biased member. The slide member and the valve ring form therebetween a flow-off chamber having a flow-off opening that is sized so that unrestricted fluid flow is permitted so as to prevent the formation of a ram pressure in the flow-off chamber. The sealing ring is movable between three axial positions relative to the valve ring. At a center position, the sealing ring seals the flow path against fluid flow. At the two other positions, the sealing ring permits fluid flow in opposite directions.

    • According to an illustrative example of the invention, a gas spring is provided with an emergency exit permitting escape of pressurized gas in the event the gas pressure exceeds a predetermined level or in the event of a dangerously high temperature. The emergency exit includes one or more fluid passages connecting the interior of the gas spring to atmosphere and a cooperating seal member for maintaining the fluid passage or passages closed under normal operating conditions. Upon the occurrence of unduly high pressures or temperatures, a destructible or deformable support for the seal or a fluid passage-bearing member permits relative movement of the seal and the cooperating fluid passage so as to open the fluid passage. As an intermediate step of pressure relief, the structure for mounting the gas spring in its environment of use, e.g. a motor vehicle, may be designed to fail under emergency conditions, e.g., fire, thereby permitting a full extension of the piston rod.

    • A door closing apparatus for closing a hinged door in which a door closer is attached to a spring unit which in turn is mounted on the door frame by a bracket. The spring unit has a torsion spring within a housing which rotates on the bracket. One end of the spring is affixed to the housing and the other end of the spring is held from rotating by a ratchet type mechanism. The ratchet mechanism may be rotated to adjust the spring. The door closer is capable of adjustment by rotating the closer cylinder. In order to rotate the cylinder, it must be disconnected from the door. A stop on the bracket engages an abutment on the housing to prevent the closer from snapping back when it is disconnected from the door. The stop and abutment are also of assistance when adjusting the tension of the spring on the housing.
