    • A retractable hose guide includes a shell assembly that is structured to be embedded into the ground. The shell assembly defines an enclosed space that is open at the top. A guide rod assembly is movably disposed within the shell assembly and structured to move between a first, retracted position, wherein the guide rod assembly is substantially disposed within the shell assembly enclosed space, and a second, extended position, wherein the guide rod assembly extends substantially above the shell assembly enclosed space. A pop-up device includes components on both the shell assembly and the guide rod assembly that act in concert to lock the guide rod assembly in either the first or second position. The pop-up device preferably includes a biasing device structured to bias the guide rod assembly toward the second, extended position. The pop-up device is structured to be actuated by a generally linear movement of the guide rod assembly.

    • An apparatus and method for reducing or preventing fiber entry whip as the loose end of a fiber being wound on a spool enters a fiber winding device. A fiber winding device includes a spool winder entrance, a winding spool and a fiber whip shield substantially surrounding the winding spool. A fiber entry whip reducer positioned in front of the fiber winding device includes at least one pulley and a guide channel including a straight entry section and a curved section leading to the fiber winding device. The guide channel is formed and positioned such that the loose end of the fiber is maintained against the guide channel by centrifugal force imparted onto the fiber by the curvature of the channel and forward motion of the fiber produced by the rotating spool, thereby producing a trajectory such that the loose end of the fiber enters the fiber winding device and is maintained against the whip shield. By maintaining the free end of the fiber against the guide channel during fiber entry, whip damage to the fiber on the spool due to impact of the fiber end during its entry is substantially reduced or completely eliminated.

    • A fiber guide for spooling glass fiber from an automatic coil winding machine onto a spool. The guide has a pay guide assembly with a receiving aperture. Two similar sections are held together with a slight gap between them. Left and right parallel strands of music wire are tightly stretched through the gap across the receiving aperture of the arc and are anchored at each end. A spool receives the left and right parallel strands or guides and is maintained very close to the last layer or surface of fiber laid down. A guide pulley is carried by the guide for guiding glass fiber between the left and right parallel strands and onto the spool. The parallel strands are tensioned by anchoring each wire in a respective standoff. In one embodiment, each end of a music wire wraps around a standoff. The wires extend through the cross drilled holes permitting adjustment by turning the standoff. In an alternative embodiment, a tensioner is formed by a pivotal plate, relative to the guide. The pivotal plate tightens the left and right parallel strands by spring force generated by a spring connected between the pivot plate and the guide. In another embodiment, the left and right parallel strands are spaced apart by washers having a predetermined thickness.

    • A silencing system includes a separation roller which is urged against or located as closely as possible to the main tape roll during the removal of tape. A point of tangency between the separation roll and the main roll forms a stable separation line as the tape is separated from the main supply roll. In a first embodiment, a separation roller is mounted to be pneumatically urged against the supply roll. The separation roller directs the tape from the supply roll through what is preferably a 180.degree. removal path to prevent any tension in the taped removed from being translated into a force which would work against the bearing force of the separation roller on the supply roll. In a second embodiment a mechanical spring is used to urge the separation roller against the supply roll. In both the first and second embodiments, one of the pivot arms is made thinner to accommodate the space normally occupied by a brake located adjacent the roll of material being separated.
