    • A system is described for controlling the engagement of a rotating drive, such as a drive for a hose reel. A power source provides rotational power to a first rotating member. A power-transfer device extends between the first rotating member and an input portion of a second rotating member. A control member linked to the first rotating member moves between first and second orientations to move the first rotating member between engaged and disengaged positions. In the engaged position, the power-transfer device is engaged to allow transfer of rotational power from the power source to the second rotating member. In the disengaged position, the power-transfer device is disengaged such that rotational power is not transferred from the power source to the second rotating member.

    • A winding machine comprising individual slides cooperating in pairs and being movable on a slide guide and carrying pendulum arms which comprise a driving shaft positioned coaxially with respect to the swivel axis of the pendulum arms which is connected to a driving motor, and a receiver device driven by the driving shaft for the winding core. The technical problem of the invention resides in the adaptation of the driving moment to the winding tension required in each specific case. The pendulum arms are provided, for the optional equipment, with further driving motors. By adding additional winding motors it is possible to enlarge the winding tension range considerably. The winding motors, not used in a specific case, are parked on an extension rail out of the working width of the machine.

    • A radially expansible supporting collet for a tubular light-weight sleeve upon which a continuous filament, yarn, or roving may be wound. The collet comprises a plurality of axially extending, sleeve contacting bars carried on a generally cylindrical body which is rotated on its normal axis. At least one generally annular, closed, pneumatically expansible bladder is carried by and rotates with the body. The bladder is located inwardly of the bars and may be connected to a source of air under pressure. When the bladder is expanded by the air, it presses outwardly against the bars to move them radially outwardly against the interior of the sleeve in order to hold the sleeve concentric with the axis of the body, to prevent its axial movement and to transmit torque to the sleeve.

    • As a web or the like passes around a driven roll, a member (e.g., a tractor pin or punch) rotatably carried by the roll at a preselected nominal distance from the roll axis is reciprocated with substantially harmonic motion in a generally radial direction toward and away from said axis by a pendulum-like mechanism having an oscillation frequency that increases as the angular velocity of the roll and hence centrifugal force on the member increases. The mechanism comprises an oscillatory element having an eccentric mass center or center of oscillation that at the midpoint of the member''s reciprocation stroke is farthest from the roll axis. A cam follower preferably couples the element to a stationary cam that encircles the roll and has a followerreceiving groove of a configuration that ensures synchronization of the element so that it will oscillate at a fundamental natural frequency through one or more complete cycles during each successive revolution of the roll despite frictional drag. Driving force exerted by the oscillatory element on the member thus desirably increases as the angular velocity of the roll increases, whereas the load on the cam remains substantially negligible irrespective of angular velocity. This enables operation at very high rotational (and hence reciprocating) speeds that produce centrifugal forces significantly exceeding those possible with prior art arrangements.
