    • A method and apparatus is provided for severing packaging material which extends between successive wrapped loads during a continuous wrapping process. Wrapped loads are conveyed along a load path in a conveying direction. A severing bar which extends lateral to the conveying direction includes a heating element which is connected to a power source by an electrical conductor. A sprocket and chain drive is used to transport the severing bar along a closed path having first and second segments. The first segments generally extends lateral to the extent of the severing bar and has a component in the conveying direction. During the first segment of transport, severing bar is transported across the load path between and along with a first pair of successive loads. The second segment of the closed path generally extends lateral to the extent of the severing bar as a component in the conveying direction. During transport over the second segment, the severing bar is transported back across the load path between and along with the second pair of successive loads. A fixed support frame is used to support the chain and sprocket drive. A guide frame, guide follower and rotary bearing are used to prevent rotation between the severing bar and the fixed support frame and to prevent twisting of the electrical conductor during repeated transport of the severing bar around the closed path.

    • This invention relates to banding machines of the kind capable of automatically applying a wrapping band around a flat article or articles, e.g., stacks of banknotes, and may be integrated with machines for counting and delivering numbers of articles, e.g., banknotes, to a banding station. The banding machines comprises a platform, the working surface of which receives an article to be banded, means for feeding a band from a magazine and positioning the band adjacent to the platform, yieldably mounted support means adapted to move adjacent said platform, reciprocable constant-stroke gripper means adapted to transfer the article from the working surface to the support means with the band therebetween, and thereafter to move to the limit of its stroke thereby to grip both the article and the band, and means for bringing together and uniting the two ends of the band. The components of the machine preferably move in a rotary manner through band-loading, article-loading, band-uniting, and bandedarticle-delivery stations.

    • A wrapping machine is provided having a combination which enables the wrapping machine to be run in a fully automatic condition. The web of wrapping material is joined to a tear strip and subsequently fed to a sheet applying work station where individual wrapper sheets are cut from the web and placed over a package. A cutting means is provided to form a slit configuration in the web of wrapping material. This configuration includes two perforations extending longitudinally with respect to the tear strip on either side thereof and a perforation that crosses the two longitudinal perforations. A moving means including primary pushing means and auxiliary pushing means is used to feed packages at predetermined intervals into the wrapping machine. Sensing means are provided to detect any irregular package feed condition being conveyed by the moving means with a first responsive means functioning to stop the moving of the packages within the machine. A heat sealing means is used in this combination and is operably connected to a second means that is responsive to any shut down condition in the wrapping machine to move the heat sealing means away from any package that is being sealed therewith thereby preventing burning of the package. Each of the specific elements provides a function that overcomes various problems associated with wrapping machines now available in the prior art. There are several individual features set forth in the separate embodiments of this invention.
