    • A method for determining rhythm units (beats per minute or BPM) in (digital) audio data forming a musical piece. The audio data is split among a plurality of determination paths wherein it is subdivided into predetermined frequency bands. The data is analyzed for transients in order to determine attack events. In addition, the time intervals between two successive attack events are measured. In this case, the time intervals are averaged and defined as the frequency-band-specific rhythm unit (BPM) of the audio data in the respective determination path. Thus, the rhythm unit which exhibits the highest beat number (BPM number) is selected from the frequency-band-specific rhythm units (BPM) of the determination paths.

    • The apparatus stores a data base including a plurality of sets of composition parameter data for a plurality of numbers of measures, each set of composition parameter data defining characteristics of a music piece to be composed, the characteristics including music structures, and at least one set of composition parameter data being provided for each number of measures among the plurality of numbers of measures. The user inputs composition conditions such as a length of time, a tempo and a meter for a music piece to be composed. The apparatus calculates the number of measures of the music piece based on the inputted time length, tempo and meter. A plurality of candidate data sets of composition parameters are searched for in the data base and displayed for the user's selection. The user selects a desired one, and the apparatus generates a melody satisfying the inputted composition conditions. When there may be a disparity between the time length of the generated melody and the time length in the inputted composition conditions, the tempo of the generated melody may be adjusted such that the both lengths become equal.

    • A reference start point RPS and a reference end point RPE for detecting a beat position BP.sub.n are set as a BP.sub.n-1 +BT.+-.DR on the basis of a beat interval BT obtained by user's guide tapping for a predetermined time, a predetermined deviation value DR and the detected last beat position BP.sub.n-1. Thus, the crest value Lrp of an audio signal exceeding a predetermined threshold TH in the specified retrieval interval is obtained. Each beat position BP.sub.n is obtained on the basis of a reference point RS of the audio signal existing when the crest value is obtained. In reproduction of an audio signal by a DMTR, a MIDI clock is generated from the beat position and output to a MIDI sequencer, etc.

    • A server system 500 is provided for receiving video clips having an associated audio/musical track for processing at the server system. The system comprises a first beat tracking module for generating a first beat time sequence from the audio signal using an estimation of the signal's tempo and chroma accent information. A ceiling and floor function is applied to the tempo estimation to provide integer versions which are subsequently applied separately to a further accent signal derived from a lower-frequency sub-band of the audio signal to generate second and third beat time sequences. A selection module then compares each of the beat time sequences with the further accent signal to identify a best match.
