    • The invention relates to a method of extracting a representation of its rhythmic structure, from a given signal. The representation is designed to yield a similarity relation between item titles. There is thus provided a method of extracting the numeric representation of a rhythmic structure for a given item of audio signal, from a database including percussive sounds in an audio signal, comprising the steps of: a) defining said rhythmic structure as a superposition of time series, each of said time series representing a temporal contribution for one of said percussive sounds in an audio signal; b) processing said input signal through a spectral analysis technique, so as to select said rhythmic information contained in said input signal; c) constructing said numeric representation of a rhythmic structure of said input signal by combining a plurality of initial time series; and d) reducing said rhythmic information contained in said plurality of time series by analyzing correlations products thereof, thereby extracting a reduced rhythmic information for an item of audio signal. The method may be combined with the step of e) effecting a distance measure between the items of audio signal on the basis of said reduced rhythmic information, whereby an item of audio signal having similar rhythm is selected.

    • Generally, a mood-based playlisting system may select content to maintain a mood consistency between selections of content. In one example, electronic content may be made available to users by determining a mood indicator indicating a present mood state of a user, determining a mood spectrum describing mood indicators that are consistent with the mood indicator for the track, and selecting a next track having a mood indicator that lies within the mood spectrum. In another example, content may be selected by determining a coordinate mood location indicating the present mood state of a user, determining a compatible mood volume indicating potential mood indicators for a next track that is compatible with the present mood, identifying one or more tracks having mood indicators that lie within the compatible mood volume, and enabling the user to access one or more of the identified tracks.

    • In accordance with a rhythm of a main melody, a auxiliary-melody or counter-melody creating rhythm pattern is supplied which indicates timing of respective hit points of a plurality of tones in the auxiliary or counter melody. Predetermined important hit points and unimportant hit points in the supplied rhythm pattern are discriminated from each other. Any one of component notes of chords, specified by a previously-supplied chord progression, is allocated to each of the thus-discriminated important hit points, while any one of scale notes, corresponding to previously-supplied scale information, is allocated to each of the unimportant hit points. Thus, an auxiliary or counter melody is created on the basis of the notes allocated to the individual hit pints.

    • Performance interface system includes a motion detector provided for movement with a performer, and a control system for receiving detection data transmitted from the motion detector and controlling a performance of a tone in response to the received detection data. State of a performer's motion is detected via a sensor of the motion detector, and detection data representative of the detected motion state is transmitted to the control system. The control system receives the detection data from the motion detector, analyzes the performer's motion on the basis of the detection data, and then controls a tone performance in accordance with the analyzed data. With this arrangement, the performer can readily take part in the tone performance in the control system. For example, as the performer moves his or her hand, leg or trunk while listening to a manual or automatic performance of a music piece being carried out by a performance apparatus of the control system, the motion detector detects the performer's motion and transmits corresponding detection data to the control system, which in turn variably controls a predetermined one of tonal factors in the music piece performance. This arrangement can readily provide interactive performance control and thereby allows an inexperienced or unskilled performer to take part in a performance with enjoyment.

    • An apparatus for analyzing an audio signal with regard to rhythm information of the audio signal by using an autocorrelation function comprises a filter bank for separating the audio signal into at least two sub-band signals. The sub-band signals are examined with regard to periodicities by an autocorrelation function, to obtain rhythm raw-information for the at least two sub-band signals. To reduce or eliminate the ambiguities of the autocorrelation function for periodical signals, the rhythm raw-information is postprocessed to obtain post-processed rhythm raw-information for the sub-band signal. The rhythm information of the audio signal is established based on the postprocessed rhythm raw-information. By the sub-band-wise ACF postprocessing, ACF ambiguities are already eliminated where they originate, and rhythm portions are added at double tempi, which an autocorrelation function processing does normally not provide, so that, as a result, a more robust determination of the rhythm information of the audio signal arises.

    • There is provided an improved system and method of determining the tempo of a digitized musical work that, optionally, allows a user to participate in the BPM determination. A first preferred aspect includes determination of estimates of the BPM of a musical work by utilizing at least two different algorithms, thereby producing a plurality of separate BPM candidates. As a further preferred aspect, the method utilizes, as an optional step, input from the user to assist in selecting the nullbestnull BPM from among the plurality of BPMs determined previously. Preferably, the user is given the option of nulltapping alongnull with the music by pressing the mouse or a key on the computer in time to the music as it is played. The program analyzes the first few taps and, from that input, selects from the BPMs the one that is most consistent with the user's input.

    • A method for determining rhythm units (beats per minute or BPM) in (digital) audio data forming a musical piece. The audio data is split among a plurality of determination paths wherein it is subdivided into predetermined frequency bands. The data is analyzed for transients in order to determine attack events. In addition, the time intervals between two successive attack events are measured. In this case, the time intervals are averaged and defined as the frequency-band-specific rhythm unit (BPM) of the audio data in the respective determination path. Thus, the rhythm unit which exhibits the highest beat number (BPM number) is selected from the frequency-band-specific rhythm units (BPM) of the determination paths.
