    • A Mach-Zehnder device includes a delay element in one arm which delays propagation of light at a first wavelength relative to propagation of light at a second wavelength. The delay element may be made up of a grating having a period which causes coupling of the first wavelength from a first mode into a second mode. In another aspect, the invention includes a second grating positioned downstream from the first grating and having a period which causes coupling of the portion of light from the second propagation mode back into the first propagation mode. Also disclosed is an optical waveguide in which light at a wavelength &lgr; can propagate in at least a first and a second mode. The waveguide has an effective index of refraction n1 with respect to the first propagation mode of &lgr;, and an effective index of refraction n2 with respect to the second propagation mode. A grating formed in said waveguide and having a period approximately equal to(&lgr;/2)(n1−n2).

    • Polarization dependencies exhibited by components of optical apparatus, such as equalizers having chromatically variable transmissivity, are reduced by splitting the incoming light stream to be equalized into two orthogonally polarized streams which are applied to opposite ends of the apparatus through polarization maintaining fibers oriented such that the light polarization is the same for both directions of transmission through the apparatus and is aligned with one of the eigenpolarizations of the chip on which the apparatus is implemented. In an illustrative embodiment of an equalizer, the incoming light stream entering one port of a circulator and emerging from a second port is applied to the splitter on its way to the equalizer while the light streams emerging from the equalizer, after being spectrally recombined, re-enter the second port of the circulator and emerge from its third port to the output thereby eliminating any polarization dependencies of the equalizer.

The filter includes a stabilization light source for varying a first wavelength of a light signal for stabilizing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, first and second optical fiber couplers for receiving an optical signal from the stabilization light source and an optical signal of a second wavelength different from a first wavelength inputted from an input port and dividing into two parts having the same intensity for thereby forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, a polarization controller connected with one side of the first optical fiber coupler for controlling a polarization of the interfered light of the interferometer, first and second wavelength division multiplex optical couplers connected with the second optical fiber coupler for separately outputting a first wavelength optical signal and a second wavelength optical signal, an optical fiber phase modulator connected with the other side of the first optical fiber coupler for varying the length of the optical fiber in accordance with a fed-back phase difference, and a stabilization circuit for receiving two optical signals of the first wavelength from the first and second wavelength division multiplex optical couplers and feeding back the phase difference to the optical fiber phase modulator for thereby implementing a constant optical path difference of the interferometer.
