    • A gripping device comprising two pivotally mounted gripping claws is operated by a double acting hydraulic cylinder. The entire gripping device is pivotally mounted from a crane or the like by means of a universal joint. A member is provided which is operated on by a pressure fluid in the double acting hydraulic cylinder and which serves to temporarily lock the universal joint against pivotal movement to provide a secure and firm connection between the gripping claws and the crane or the like on which the claws are supported. In one embodiment of the invention a rod engages with a ball shaped head to prevent pivotal movement of the universal joint, and in a second embodiment bellows are inflated by hydraulic fluid to prevent movement of a pivotal joint.

    • A loading apparatus includes a bucket which performs three functions -- it serves as a brush loader, a trash loader, and clamshell bucket. The bucket includes a pair of arcuate jaws which are pivotable between a closed position in which the edges of the jaws are positioned adjacent each other and an open position in which the edges of the jaws are spaced apart. Each bucket jaw includes a set of arcuately extending ribs which are adapted to engage and pick up brush and a set of relatively pointed teeth which extend inwardly beyond the ribs and are adapted to engage and pick up trash.

The grappling apparatus includes upper and lower frames that are rotated relative to each other and the lower head has transversely spaced fixed grapple heels located on opposite sides of the pivot axis between the frames.     • The upper ends of a pair of grapple tongs are joined through means of a pair of cross link assemblies and an extensible and retractable hydraulic actuator. A pair of suspension link assemblies respectively have lower ends pivotally connected to the upper ends of the pair of tongs and have upper ends pivotally connected to a yoke which is connected to an output shaft of a rotary joint. The geometry of the pivotal connections of the cross and suspension link assemblies with the pair of tongs is such that the actuator undergoes very little vertical translation during the operation thereof and a pair of relatively short fluid hoses extend between the lower end of the rotary joint output shaft and the actuator and pass through the yoke.

    • The specification discloses an apparatus for removing slag from a bath of molten metal. It has a casing provided with a gripping device at one end to allow it to be connected to the hook of a travelling crane. Two cooperating metal slag removing scoops are pivotally mounted at the other end of the casing and a mechanism is connected to the scoops to cause their pivoting action when it is moved axially of the casing. The mechanism is actuated by a pneumatic jack housed in the casing and having connections to a source of pneumatic fluid. The scoop operating mechanism is connected to the operating rod of the pneumatic jack so that actuation of the operating rod causes pivoting of the scoops for slag removal. Preferably, the apparatus includes a rigid structure at the other end of the casing, the scoops being pivotally mounted on the said structure. The latter is preferably further provided with a shield intended to protect the casing and the jack from the heat of the bath of molten metal. Also, the bottom of the casing is filled with heat insulating material.

    • A log skidder of the type equipped with a boom assembly and a grapple assembly having a pair of arms operable to be closed around the front end of a load of logs or trees. Loop means are associated with the ends of the grapple arms whereby when the grapple arms are closed around the end of a load of logs, an interior loop is formed which engages the end of the load. A main line is trained over guide means located higher than the normal load transport position of the front end of the loop hauled by the vehicle and is attached to the loop means. Upon drawing in the main line by take-up means, the front end of the main line and loop means. Upon forward movement of the vehicle, the load is dragged by the main line and the loop means.
