    • An improved destructive and visual measurement automation system and a method for measuring a web thickness of a microdrill are provided. When a dual-axis motion platform module moves the microdrill to a first position, a reflection module reflects a first image in a first direction toward a second direction. A vision module receives the reflected first image in the second direction and outputs the received first image to a computer. According to the first image, the computer performs a positioning procedure and a grinding procedure to drive a drill grinding module to grind the microdrill to a sectional position to be measured of the microdrill. When the microdrill is moved to a second position, the vision module outputs a second image to the computer. According to the second image, the computer performs an image computing procedure to obtain the web thickness at the sectional position to be measured.

    • A drill for making a hole within a workpiece has a body extending along a longitudinal axis, at least one flute extending along the body, and a drill point extending from the end of the body. The drill point has a periphery and is comprised of a chisel edge, a primary cutting edge extending inwardly from the periphery, a secondary cutting edge extending outwardly from the chisel edge, and a tertiary cutting edge connecting the primary cutting edge with the secondary cutting edge, wherein the tertiary cutting edge has a negative axial rake angle. A method for producing such a drill point is also disclosed wherein in one grinding pass a gash forms the axial rake angle of the secondary cutting edge, and in a separate grinding pass a portion of the secondary cutting edge is removed to produce a tertiary cutting edge having an axial rake angle that is negative.

    • A drill sharpener is provided which has a point-splitting port which simplifies the procedure for producing a split point on a drill bit undergoing sharpening. The point-splitting port is positioned relative to a grinding wheel assembly such that, when the drill held by a chuck is advanced toward the grinding wheel, a flute of the drill at the drill tip is brought into contact with the grinding wheel. The port has alignment stops therein which mate with flats provided on the barrel of the chuck to ensure proper alignment of the chuck and drill relative to the grinding wheel. The stops also limit the extent of inward travel of the chuck and drill to a predetermined distance. A debris or grit collection tube is also provided to be inserted into an unused port of the drill sharpener, to contain and confine any debris or grit attempting to exit the sharpener through the unused port.
