    • A camera is provided with flash lamp means, preferably a single flash lamp, useful for both range-determining purposes, for automatic focus control and/or flash lamp light exposure control, and in response to depression of the shutter release control, generates an initial range-determining flash of light and then a film exposure flash of light if flash exposure is desired. Before the shutter is opened, the range-determining flash of light reflected from the object involved is detected by a light sensor feeding the inputs of one or more signal level detectors respectively responsive to different peak levels of the reflected flash lamp light profiles indicating object distances falling within different adjacent range zones by being triggered into a given state. In the automatic focus control form of the invention, the outputs of the signal level detectors are scanned sequentially in the order where the signal level detectors responsive to profiles of objects in the nearest range zone are scanned first. A rotatable lens unit starting from a nearest range focussing position is stopped when the first signal level detector having a triggered condition is scanned, the lens unit then being in a properly focussed position for the corresponding range zone.

    • A substantially shortened camera for use with the 110 cassette is achieved by removing the customary dispensing spool chamber from the camera entirely, and by configuring the outer surface of the imaging station wall to closely correspond to the confronting wall of the dispensing chamber of the cassette. The rear portion of the camera is completely open to allow direct insertion of a cassette, and the customary loading door is completely eliminated. A storable slide is insertable to be captively retained by slide-engaging grooves so that the slide when inserted covers the otherwise open back of the camera. The slide retaining grooves are configured to lie in the film plane of an inserted cassette so that an inserted slide will strike a film-engaging cocking lever to actuate it to a cocking position. Insertion of the slide thus cocks the system for testing shutter operation with the cassette removed. Loading instructions are presented in diagramatic form on the slide, which is retained by slide-in grooves on the bottom of the camera when the cassette is in place.

    • An automatic focusing camera is operated between daylight and flash modes automatically responsively to ambient light photosensings. The lens is operable between a near-focus setting and a far-focus setting, taking the far-focus setting automatically in the daylight mode. In flash mode the aperture is automatically set to its maximum value, whereas in daylight mode the aperture is automatically set to one of at least two reduced aperture settings. The largest aperture setting in daylight mode is the hyperfocal aperture setting corresponding to the far-focus lens setting. A further reduction in aperture below the hyperfocal value is governed by a filmspeed entry system and ambient light sensings. The changeover threshold between daylight and flash mode is also governed by the filmspeed entry system.

    • A double-exposure prevention system for a still camera having a cockable spring-biased linear movable shutter-actuating slider operable between a cocked condition and held thereat by a latch movably responsive to a manually operated release member and thereafter upon release of the latch to a shutter-actuating position is provided with means for allowing one end of the slider to be rotated out of and away from the axis of the shutter-actuating movement throughout most of the subsequent rewind operation. While in this second angular position, the slider disables the operation of the release member, preventing accidental tripping of the latch after a cocking condition has been restored. During a small terminal portion of the film advance and after the preceding frame has been safely advanced so as to be out of the way, the film advance mechanism then rotates the slider back to its initial position. In the preferred form of the invention, these features are accomplished by modifying the location and configuration of a conventional non-safetied shutter release system. No additional parts are necessary.

    • An electronic shutter mechanism for a still camera comprises a shutter blade, preferably carrying a solenoid armature, urged by a first spring into an initial lens aperture closing position. An initially latched actuating member for moving the shutter blade to a lens aperture exposing position carries a normally energized solenoid coil to attract the shutter blade carried armature thereto so that the shutter blade moves with the actuating member until the coil is deenergized. When the actuating member is unlatched, a second spring urges the actuating member and the shutter blade magnetically attached thereto into a lens aperture opening position against the return force of the first spring. Upon the unlatching of the actuating member a timing circuit establishes a timing period depending upon the amount of ambient light, after which the solenoid coil is deenergized so the first spring returns the shutter blade quickly to a lens aperture closing position.

    • An electrically driven automatic film advance camera with automatic transition to rewind without external actuation is described. Film advance after each exposure occurs automatically after release of the shutter actuating button by means of an integral electric drive motor preferably contained within the film take-up spool. The end of film condition during film advance is signalled by a sudden onset in film tension, which actuates a switching system to reverse motor drive polarity and power the motor until the film is completely rewound into the cassette, whereupon motor actuation ceases. A take-up spool gear drive train remains fully engaged at all times. During the rewind operation both the take-up spool and the drive spool are driven simultaneously by the drive motor to facilitate film disengagement. A film engaging sprocket serves to govern film advance for framing purposes, the sprocket being principally in an idling state throughout the film advance operation. An auto-loading feature is provided in the form of an engaging hook on the film take-up spool, whereby during the loading operation the film advance mechanism actuated once to cause film capture by the take-up spool. Threading of the take-up spool is thereby totally eliminated. A transitional propulsive assist to the film capture operation is provided. A large take-up spool is employed, and the drive motor placed therein, resulting in a significant saving of space.

    • A camera includes a film drive motor, that connected through a series of gears, drives a bi-directional moving control element. The moving control element is, in turn, mechanically linked to a shutter striker, shutter striker release mechanism, lens focus mechanism and aperture control mechanism. The film drive motor also drives a film advance gear mechanism and a film rewind gear mechanism. Under the control of an electronic control system, by selectively changing the rotation direction of the film advance motor, and hence the direction of travel of the moving control element, the moving control element is first driven in the forward direction to sequentially move a shutter striker to a cocked position and then to set a preferred picture taking position for the lens focusing mechanism and an aperture control mechanism. The moving control element is then driven in the reverse direction to, in sequence, release the shutter striker to take a picture at the preferred picture taking position for the lens focusing mechanism and aperture control mechanism, reset the lens focusing mechanism and the aperture control mechanism, and forward wind the film to the next picture taking position.
