    • The invention provides a variety of devices for supporting at least a portion of a user's body. In some embodiments, the invention provides a support device which includes a bladder capable of containing a fluid and a post adjacent the bladder. The bladder may form a rolling diaphragm portion with the post such that when a force is applied to the bladder, the rolling diaphragm portion of the bladder rolls along the post decreasing the volume of the bladder. In some embodiments, the invention provides a post which includes a reduced cross-sectional area in comparison to an adjacent region of the post such that the resistance of the rolling diaphragm portion of the bladder to rolling movement along the post due to the applies force decreases as the bladder rolls along the reduced cross-sectional area region. In some embodiments, the support device includes a plurality of bladders and/or a plurality of posts.

    • Pumping cartridges useful for medical and surgical pumping and infusion procedures. In one aspect, a series of pumping cartridges include cylinders and pistons which have a sealing component including a circumferential, flared sealing flange and can be configured to enable the pumping cartridge to generate high liquid pumping pressures. Many of the pumping cartridges can be configured to be detachable from a pump drive unit and disposable after a single use. Some pistons include or at least partially form a valve and/or are relatively movable with respect to a connected piston rod. Valves include a valve seat and a movable sealing element able to create a seal capable of withstanding differences in fluid pressures thereacross of at least about 1,000 psi. The movable sealing element is concave in shape, and may be curved for improved sealing performance. Methods for pumping or infusing a liquid for delivery to the body of a patient or a surgical or medical instrument.

In certain embodiments, the cartridge, including a cylinder and a movable piston assembly, is initially assembled or subsequently positioned so that the distance between the attachment point on the piston assembly for coupling to a drive assembly, and a reference point on the cylinder, is greater than the maximal distance that will be encountered during normal oscillation of the piston during use. The cartridge, in certain embodiments, may be pressed into a drive assembly that immobilizes the cartridge and couples the piston assembly to the driveshaft. In certain embodiments, when the cartridge is fully inserted into the drive assembly, the piston is pressed into the cylinder sufficiently to establish a selected distance so that the piston shaft is in the proper position to engage with a coupling mechanism carried on the driveshaft.

    • A hand tightenable connector provides a high pressure seal between a first element and a second element. A first female element includes a recess for supporting a compressible O-ring and a second male element includes a ferrule which deforms the O-ring in the recess when the male and female elements are mated. The ferrule abuts against the surface defining the opening of the O-ring recess so that a high pressure seal is effected between the first and second elements without severely distorting the O-ring. The connector may be used to couple various components of a high pressure fluid delivery system such as are found in a jet cutting system.

    • A mechanism stretches and slightly twists an intraaortic balloon to a stretched and wrapped state prior to insertion or removal. One embodiment includes a member which extends through a catheter from the handle to the balloon, and which advances to extend the balloon while slightly twisting it. A spiral drive screw assembly in the handle defines a precise ratio of balloon extension to twist, and also defines fixed total amounts of twist and extension delivered by the member. The mechanism permits the balloon to be fully untwisted once it is inserted and to be recompacted, following use, for removal from the patient. The device is of particular utility for a large diameter or non-cylindrical balloon, and for inserting a balloon along an arterial path having a narrow passage or sharp curve.
