    • A self-attaching nut for attachment to a panel including a central pilot portion having a generally cylindrical outer surface, a flange portion surrounding the outer surface of the pilot portion including an annular groove surrounding the pilot portion having a substantially V-shaped bottom wall and a generally planar panel support surface surrounding the annular groove. The panel support surface includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced radial ribs extending into the annular groove, but spaced from the outer surface of the pilot portion. The grooves may be convex or concave or a combination of convex and concave grooves. In one embodiment, the nuts are rectangular and the back face include two pair of transverse linear grooves for interconnection by frangible wires in side to side relation.

    • A method of forming pierce and clinch nuts by rolling a section having the desired cross-section, punching equally spaced bores through the central pilot portion and then punching configured openings through the central pilot portion having convex arcuate surfaces and eliminating sharp corners. The strip of interconnected self-attaching fasteners may be installed directly from the strip in a panel, fed in bulk or separate fasteners interconnected by frangible connectors. The resultant self-attaching nut includes a central pilot portion having a bore through the top face, integral flange portions extending from opposed sides and the pilot portion includes convex arcuate faces reducing or eliminating stress cracking and propagation of stress cracks.

    • Methods of forming and feeding self-attaching fasteners are disclosed wherein the strip includes a plurality of spaced abutment surfaces, preferably notches, which may be used both during the manufacturing process and feeding of a strip of fasteners to an installation head. Where the fasteners are interconnected in a strip, by frangible wires, the wires are located in the bottom wall of the panel receiving grooves in the flange portions on opposed sides of the projecting pilot portion. A self-attaching fastener having deformable inclined lip portions which extend upwardly and toward the pilot portion from the flange portions which are deformed during installation to provide further securement for the panel when deformed in the grooves.

    • A nut feed system and method of feeding nuts through a nut feed passage which avoids contact between the feed pawl and the nut bore. The end face of the nut includes a nut feed groove extending perpendicular to the nut bore and the free end of the feed pawl is received in the groove to drive the nuts through a nut feed passage without contacting the bore. The disclosed embodiment of the nut includes a counterbore through the end face and radial channel-shaped feed grooves and the feed pawl includes a cylindrical center portion and radial portions received in the counterbore and feed grooves.

    • The fastener of the fastener and panel assembly includes a body portion received in a panel opening and a tubular barrel having a free end extending radially inwardly and a midportion bowed outwardly having a diameter greater than the panel opening. The body portion has an outside diameter greater than the inside diameter of the panel opening to form an interference fit providing torque resistance and preventing push-through of the fastener. The method of installing a fastener includes inserting the fastener body portion into the panel opening with the barrel received in a first die member and the body portion supported in the panel opening by a second die member. The end of the barrel is deformed radially inwardly and toward the body portion by the first die member and the midportion of the barrel is deformed radially outwardly preventing withdrawal of the fastener element from the panel. The second die member simultaneously deforms the body of the fastener radially outwardly to form the interference fit with the panel.
