    • A rail road car has a deck for carrying wheeled vehicles. It has a bridge plate mounted to one end to permit wheeled vehicles to be conducted between the rail road car and an adjacently coupled rail road car. The bridge plate is movable between an extended, “drive-over” longitudinal orientation relative to the rail road car, and a side-ways, or cross-ways stowed orientation. The bridge plate can be moved to the stowed position by uncoupling the rail car, and pivoting the bridge plate to the cross-ways position. The cars can be re-coupled by placing the bridge plate in the length-wise orientation, and then advancing two cars together to form a coupling.

    • A traction assist device (16) adapted for girdling a motor vehicle tire (10) is fabricated as a nominally flat polymeric part that can assume a circular shape for fitting onto the tire. The part has a pair of side bars (18, 20) that are nominally straight, but assume circular shapes for fitting against opposite side walls (14) of the tire. A number of transverse bars (22) integrally joining with the side bars extend between the side bars at intervals along the length of the side bars. Each transverse bar is nominally straight, but wraps over the tire tread (12) when the device is installed. Respective ends (32, 34) of the side bars cooperatively form a respective connector (36) for connecting the respective ends together using interlocking serrated zones (40, 54). One zone (54) is on a pawl (54) that can be released to allow the ends to be separated.

    • An articulated railcar has several well car units for carrying shipping containers, highways trailers, or a combination of the two. The well car units permit the nose of a long highway trailer to overhang the articulated connection between two adjacent cars. A brake valve is located in a relief formed in the main bolster of one of the articulated units, out of the way of the overhanging trailer. Each well car unit has a side beam having a roll formed top chord reinforced by a top chord plate, a downwardly extending web, and a lower sill formed of a thick angle. The service, or auxiliary, and emergency brake reservoirs are mounted in a saddle bag configuration to the outside face of the webs of the opposite side beams of the articulated unit, tucked underneath the reinforced roll formed top chord.

    • A knock control system for internal combustion engines comprising a knock sensor and a knock detection circuit that uses an electronic engine controller. The knock sensor creates an electrical output signal indicating the presence of engine structure vibrations resulting from engine combustion characteristics. The circuit filters the knock sensor signal, time gated at independent crankshaft angles, and transfers it to a noise channel and to a knock channel. A comparator distinguishes between background vibration and vibrations during the combustion event that are due to knock. The knock detection function, along with the crankshaft angle position reference signal, develops time gated "snapshot" signals indicating the magnitudes for both the background noise and the vibrations created by denotation and distinguishes between them. These signals are processed by the knock detection system along with the engine controller's other system variables to influence engine control parameter changes to prevent further knock.

    • A rail road freight car truck has a truck bolster mounted transversely to a side frame pair. A mounting interface between the axel ends and the sideframe pedestals allows lateral swing truck like rocking motion of the sideframes combined with a longitudinal selfsteering capability by use of a longitudinally oriented rocker that permits resistance to deflection proportionally to the weight carried across the interface. The truck may have auxiliary centering elements made of resilient elastomeric material mounted in the pedestal seats and may also have friction dampers provided with brake linings or like on the face engaging the sideframe columns, on the slope face, having a disinclination to stick-slip behavior and operate to yield upward and downward friction forces that are not overly unequal and may be mounted in a four-cornered arrangement at each end of the truck bolster. Spring groups may include subgroups of springs of differing heights.

    • A hopper car discharge section may be wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Outflow is controlled by closure members, at least one of which is movable. The closure members come together to a closed condition or position for retaining lading. When apart, in an open position or condition, lading may be discharged. A seal member or seal member assembly is mounted to one or both of the closure members. When open, the seal member or seal member assembly lies substantially flush with, or shy of, the slope of the surface of the closure member. When closed, the seal member may be self-energizing, in the sense that as lading is added the seal may tend to seal more tightly. The seal assembly may include a cantilevered spring that presents a land to the opposed closure member, and a fulcrum, over, or across, which the spring is cantilevered, such that pushing down on one end of the spring may tend to cause the other end to flex upward. The fulcrum may also be cantilevered outward from the slope sheet of the closure member to which the seal assembly is attached. The discharge section may be robustly reinforced to discourage deformation.
