    • A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display device, a surface light source to irradiate illumination light toward the display device, and an optical member to reflect linearly polarized light having a light-vibration plane parallel to its reflection axis and to transmit linearly polarized light having a light-vibration plane parallel to its transmission axis. The display device includes a pair of substrates facing each other through a gap, a liquid crystal layer sealed into the gap between the substrates, and a pair of polarizing plates sandwiching the substrates therebetween. The substrates include electrodes formed on one of their facing surfaces. The optical member is arranged between the display device and the light source so that the reflection axis faces a direction crossing an absorption axis of the polarizing plate arranged between the display device and the light source at an angle falling within the 15° to 90° range.

The electron-collector/dye layer provided on the first electrode includes an electron collector and dye. A minimum value of the second diameter range is greater than a maximum value of the first diameter range.     • A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first polarizing plate, a liquid crystal display cell, a second polarizing plate, a switching cell, a first reflective polarizing plate, and a surface light source, which are arranged in this order. The apparatus further includes a control driving unit to switch the switching cell between a first and second state. In the first state, plane of polarization of polarized light emitted by the surface light source and transmitted through the first reflective polarizing plate and the switching cell is coincident with a transmissive axis of the second polarizing plate. In the second state, a plane of polarization of the polarized light input to the liquid crystal display cell from the side of the first polarizing plate and transmitted through the second polarizing plate and the switching cell is coincident with a reflective axis of the first reflective polarizing plate.

    • A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device includes a reflecting layer formed on a first substrate, a color separation layer formed on the reflecting layer, and a first electrode formed on the color separation layer. The device also includes second electrodes, switching thin film transistors, scanning lines, and signal lines, these components being formed on the second substrate. The second electrodes face the first electrode. The device also includes a liquid crystal layer arranged between the first electrode and the second electrodes. The liquid crystal layer includes a polymer dispersant and liquid crystal molecules. Each of the thin film transistors includes a gate electrode, source electrode and drain electrode. The scanning lines connect to the gate electrodes. The signal lines connect to corresponding one of source electrodes and drain electrodes. The other of the source electrodes and the drain electrodes connect to the corresponding second electrode.
