After the occupant protection device has been tripped, the side airbag can inflated and be positioned laterally next to the vehicle occupant in such a manner that the outflow opening and/or the overflow opening is closed, is throttled, or remains open according to the body size of the vehicle occupant.

摘要： An airbag for a vehicle occupant restraint system of a motor vehicle is provided. The airbag comprising at least one first and one second layer of an airbag material, at least one inflatable chamber formed between the first and the second layer, which is inflatable for the protection of a vehicle occupant and at least one seam, by which the first and the second layer are connected with each other along at least a portion of their respective circumference. The airbag is deployed between a vehicle occupant and a vehicle side structure. The airbag is formed such that when the airbag is mounted in the vehicle and inflated, the seam extends along a plane which is oriented obliquely or transversely to a plane formed by the longitudinal and the height direction of the vehicle.

The airbag comprises a first inflatable area; a second inflatable area; a shoulder area arranged between the first and seconds area. The shoulder area extends in the inflated status of the airbag in the area of a shoulder and/or in an upper arm region of the vehicle occupant to be protected. The shoulder area has a thickness lower than the thickness of the first and second areas as determined in a direction vertical to the main plane of extension of the inflated airbag or comprises a recess in the airbag. The airbag is to be arranged in a vehicle such that, in case of a side collision of the vehicle, the shoulder and/or the upper arm region of the vehicle occupant strikes the shoulder area of the airbag.

The airbag module comprising a gas bag inflatable with gas to protect a person, a gas generator longitudinally extending along a direction of extension for releasing the gas required for inflating the gas bag, and a flat carrier for carrying the gas bag and the gas generator, wherein the carrier includes two legs which are connected with each other along the direction of extension and are located opposite each other transverse to the direction of extension, so that the carrier forms a receptacle open on three sides for the gas generator and the gas bag. The carrier comprises a flow-off region, through which gas emerging from at least one outflow opening of the gas generator can be flown off into an exterior space surrounding the airbag module.
