    • The present invention relates to a treadmill whose speed is controlled by music. An audiosource is installed on the console of the treadmill. The music outputted by the audiosource passes through an amplifier and a band-pass filter takes out the frequency wave at certain range from the music, thereby avoiding unnecessary interference. Besides, a microprocessor is used to enable the driving motor of the walking belt to continuously change its speed according to the music rhythm and intensity. Moreover, the operator of the treadmill adjusts his walking speed to the music rhythm so that the speeds of the music, the motor and the operator are integrated into one speed, thereby enhancing the exercising fun without feeling tired. Furthermore, the operator can move in accordance with the music rhythm, thereby reaching the body shaping effect.

    • High resolution modular large screen displays which can require tens of minutes to display or "paint" an image are updated in real time through the use of active modules, each having its own display device, display driver, processor, memory and interfacing. Communication channels are provided between modules themselves as well as between the modules and a network interface that distributes the video source material in parallel to the modules. The modular approach coupled with the use of active modules permits significant communication reduction that in turn permits real time image production across large areas due to the use of parallel data paths to the display memory distributed across the modules, and through the transmission of structured data, including compressed images, compressed video, sampled data and graphics primitives, permitted by the provision in each module of a processor which converts structured data to images. The use of modules with internal processing also permits driving displays of differing configurations, such as oblong, trapezoidal and even circular displays, or even driving displays with irregular surfaces. As a further result of using active modules, increased speed or flexibility is achieved in part due to computer processing power which may be directed only to those sections of the display that are actively addressed. As an additional feature, the active modules may be initialized by software agents, with formatting and other display parameters being transparent to the format or pixel density of the original image.

    • A switch for digital communication networks includes a queuing system capable of implementing a broad class of scheduling algorithms for many different applications and purposes, with the queueing system including means for providing numerical tags to incoming cells or packets, the values of the tags being calculated when incoming cells or packets arrive at the switch. A queue and search module is provided to select cells or packets for transmission based on these tags. The combination of the tags and the queue and search module enables simple and fast implementations of a wide variety of scheduling algorithms, including algorithms for supporting communication traffic with real time requirements, continuous media such as audio and video, and traffic requiring very fast response. Furthermore, multiple classes of traffic are supported in a single network switch, each class having its own scheduling algorithm and policy. The queue and search module is designed for VLSI implementation, and in one embodiment supports an ATM switch with 16 ports, each port operating at 622 megabits per second.

    • A system enables multiple users to interact with a picture presentation. The system includes a display surface having a horizontal orientation, preferably circular. A processor is configured to composite an image. The composite image includes a picture display area, an orientation area, and a plurality of control panels. There is one control panel for each of the users. A database, coupled to the processor, stores annotated pictures. Selected annotated pictures are to be composited into the picture display area of the displayed image. The pictures are selected using the control panel. A display device, coupled to the processor, displays the composite image on the display surface, and an input device is used to interact with the control panels, the orientation area, and the annotated pictures to enable the users to concurrently control the compositing of the sequence of images.

    • A computer network guarantees timeliness to distributed real-time applicans by allowing an application to specify its timeliness requirements and by ensuring that a data source can meet the specified requirements. A reflective memory area is established by either a data source or an application. A data source maps onto this reflective memory area and writes data into it. In order to receive data from this data source, an application requests attachment to the reflective memory area to which the data source is mapped and specifies timeliness requirements. The application may specify that it needs data either periodically or upon occurrence of some condition. The application allocates buffers at its local node to receive data. The data source then establishes a data push agent thread at its local node, and a virtual channel over the computer network between the data push agent thread and the application attached to its reflective memory area. The data push agent thread transmits data to the application over the virtual channel according to the timeliness requirements specified by the application. Such a channel-based reflective memory system simplifies data sharing and communication by utilizing the typically unidirectional pattern of data sharing and communication. For example, plant data typically is sent from a plant controller to an operator station, and control data typically is sent from an operator station to a plant controller. Additionally, a single writer, multiple reader model of communication is typically sufficient. That is, all of the data does not need to be transmitted to all of the nodes in a computer network all of the time. Thus, flexibility, switchability and scalability are provided by using channels between reader and writer groups. Scalability is provided by using channels to control data reflection and to represent the unidirectional access pattern. By using an asynchronous transfer mode network, flexibility in channel establishment and cost reduction may be achieved.
