    • The present disclosure relates to a trimming and/or fin cutting tool for removing ridges, burrs and casting seams of the kind having interchangeable cutting edges, preferably made of hard metal, in which one or more cutting lines of the tool is or are formed by a number of cutting plates (1) detachably mounted on the vertical side (3) of a tool body (2). The tool enables the rational use of the detachable cutting plates and is characterized mainly in that the cutting plates are reversible and are attached to the tool body (2) in a plane directed in the working direction of the tool, the cutting plates having spaces between them to form gaps (6) for the passage of chips. Preferably, the cutting plates along the or each cutting line are attached to the tool body (2) in rows at different heights relative to a base, the separate effective cutting edges of the cutting plates (1) along a common cutting line being arranged to overlap each other.

    • Apparatus for use with a pair of thermoplastic strips of the type illustrated in U.S. Pat. No. 3,608,177 wherein one strip is formed with studs longitudinally spaced at intervals and a second strip apertured and counterbored at the same intervals is used to bind sheets apertured at the same intervals at locations spaced inward from one marginal edge is described. A pressure bar is first manually moved to operative position and a handle compresses the strips together by exerting a controlled force on the pressure bar. The handle then initiates movement of a support for a knife consisting of a length of metallic ribbon material having spaced horizontal stretches in horizontal alignment with excess stud lengths of the first strip projecting through the second strip, the ribbon being under tension to hold such stretches taut. As the support moves toward the studs a current is passed through the ribbon, heating it so that the ribbon functions to cut off the excess stud length slightly below the second strip. The current then is terminated as the support moves upward forming heads on the stud stubs filling the counterbores in the second strip. By this time, the ribbon has cooled and functions to cool and harden the heads. Retraction of the handle returns the support to initial position and releases the pressure bar. The handle also actuates a punch for the apertures in the sheets, the punch being located at a different station in the machine from the binding mechanisms.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for producing fastener-element-free gaps in a continuous slide fastener chain. The apparatus comprises a punch block, a cutting punch reciprocally movable therein, and a die block positioned in oppositely spaced relation to said punch block and having a recess for receiving a group of fastener elements to be severed, said cutting punch having an upward stroke limited such that the distance between an extreme operating end of said punch and the bottom surface of said recess is smaller than the overall thickness of said fastener chain but larger than the thickness of said fastener elements. The arrangement of the apparatus ensures that adjacent longitudinal edges of the fastener stringer tapes are deflected upwardly progressively away from each other as the fastener chain is moved past the cutting punch so that a group of fastener elements severed off the deflected edges of said tapes along a length of the chain corresponding to a fastener-element-free gap to be produced.

    • Apparatus for shearing into sections or fragments, the tubes containing nuclear fuel of combustion elements, and which are secured together by lateral, longitudinally-spaced tie rods or bands. After removal of the inert ends with which each element is commonly provided, the bundle of tubes, sans ends, is moved longitudinally by steps of 20 to 30 mm each, into a shearing apparatus wherein after each step the bundle of tubes is clamped to a fixed stop or surface and the projecting ends are sheared off by a reciprocating shearing tool to thus form a number of fragments of tube and fuel each. In the prior art when two successive shearing cuts were on opposite sides respectively, of a tie band, the band still held the cut fragments together in a unitary mass of excessive size, capable of clogging the pipes leading to the tank in which the fuel or the metal of the tubes is dissolved. To obviate that disadvantage the present invention incorporates into the reciprocating shearing tool, a shearing tooth projection fixed therewith and which is spaced ahead of the shearing edge of the tool in the direction of the working stroke. The construction is such that when a tie rod or band is advanced into position to be sheared off on the next stroke of the shearing tool, the projection first engages and shears the band to thus allow the subsequently-sheared fragments of fuel and tubes to disintegrate or separate as the tool completes its shearing stroke.
