    • A method of manufacturing an annular base portion of an electrical slip ring assembly having a plurality of conductive rings formed in the outer circumferential surface thereof is described. The slip ring base is molded, and grooves are machined into the outer circumferential surface thereof. Conductive strips are cut into a series of lengths forming conductive rings to be placed about the outer circumference of the annular base member. The individual lengths of conductive material are anchored to the outer circumferential surface of the slip ring base and a rolling pressure is exerted on them about the circumference of the base to cause the rings to be press fit into the grooves previously formed on the base. When the complete circumference of the ring has been press fit into its respective groove, the other end of the conductive ring is then secured to the base. An appropriate fixture is provided for exerting the lateral and a rolling pressure on each conductive ring to properly press fit it into a groove on the annular base member.

    • A slip ring assembly having a slip ring holder made of a composite dielectric material reinforced by layers of fabric is molded with the slip rings positioned in the mold, or alternately, grooves are machined in the holder for receiving the slip rings. The holder has at least one flange for mounting the assembly on a rotating part such as a spinner bulkhead of an aircraft propeller assembly. Slip rings are adhered to the composite material of the holder as a result of molding, or use of an adhesive where the grooves are machined in the holder.The metallic wire connections fastened to the slip rings by welding also serve to hold the slip rings in the grooves of the holder. The wire connections may have pins for receiving mating receptacles. Openings in the ends of the metallic wire connections are suitable for crimping wire connectors to the deicers or deicer terminals.

    • A slip ring assembly comprises an insulating body having a pair of slip rings on its external surface, each slip ring having electrically connected thereto a respective connector element a part of which is disposed radially inwardly of the slip rings. The body has an internal bore which receives a shaft of a rotary electric machine in use, a side wall of the bore being provided with axially extending recesses which are disposed radially inwardly of the connector element parts respectively. The presence of these recesses, which may alternatively be of helical or annular configuration, ensures that the connector elements do not contact the aforementioned shaft in operation and thereby create a short-circuit. The slip ring assembly is produced by placing the rings and the connector elements in an annular mould cavity whose radially inner surface has projections thereon which correspond to the desired configuration of the recesses in the completed assembly.

    • In a process or method according to the invention the parts of an electrical contact device, such as a slip ring comprising the ring to receive the liquid metal and the probe or brush for contacting the liquid metal are treated by sputter etching to remove the parent metal oxide. Prior to exposure of the electrodes to any oxygen, a sacrificial metal is sputter deposited on the parts. Preferably this sacrificial metal is one that oxidizes slowly and is readily dissolved by the liquid metal. The sacrificial metal may then be removed from unwanted areas. The remainder of the ring and the probe to be wet by the liquid metal are submerged in the liquid metal or the liquid metal is flushed over these areas, preferably while they are being slightly abraded, until all the sacrificial material on these portions is wet by the liquid metal. In doing so the liquid metal dissolves the sacrificial metal and permanently wets the parent metal. Preferred materials used in the process and for the electrodes of electrical contact devices are high purity (99.0%) nickel or AISI type 304 stainless steel for the electrical contact devices, gallium as the liquid metal, and gold as the sacrificial material.
