    • A web tension isolator or amplifier includes a rotatable pulley engageable with a driver pulley in response to tension forces in a web that is wrapped on the driven pulley. The mechanism maintains the film tension ratio (i.e., the ratio of the tensions in the web portions on the two sides of the driven pulley) substantially constant regardless of the magnitude of the web tension. The mechanism automatically and quickly adjusts the web tension for any variations in the tensions of the web portions at either side of the driver pulley. The mechanism can be used (for example) in a motion picture projector between the film gate and a supply reel and/or a take-up reel.

    • A film buffer for motion picture projectors is provided to permit the smooth advancement of the film through a projection gate, and to serve as a shock absorber to insure even projection. The buffer comprises a pair of rollers in fixed relation to each other juxtaposed to form a loop in the film in its path of travel, from a film supply reel to a film transport mechanism for incrementally advancing each frame of the film past the projection gate, a bracket for holding said rollers pivotally mounted on the face of the projector at a mid-point between the two rollers to permit swinging movement to increase or decrease the film loop size depending upon the tension of the film, a counterweight fixedly connected to the bracket to pivotally bias the same into a position to increase the film loop size, and a torsion spring positioned beneath the counterweight to engage and cushion the same as it moves toward a rest position. When the tension of the film varies only as a result of the intermittent operation of the film transport mechanism, the film loop tightens and loosens around the rollers and thereby employs the inherent elasticity of the film to urge the film from the supply reel in a smooth and uninterrupted manner. If the tension of the film increases due to a jam in the supply reel or the like, the inertia of the counterweight will be overcome allowing the bracket to swing into a position to reduce the loop size.

    • A film transport mechanism for use in conjunction with a motion picture projector is a free standing unit carrying supply and takeup reels and associated drive motors. The arbors for the supply and takeup reels are generally parallel, and positioned therebetween is a free running sprocket assembly. Film direction rollers cause film from the supply reel to run over one side of the sprocket and additional rollers to direct the return film from a projector over the opposite side of the sprocket whereby the rate of film advance to the projector and return are equal. The transport mechanism transfers a major portion of the torque required to pull film off the supply reel from the projector to the transport thereby significantly reducing the tension on the film going to and from the projector. The entire assembly includes a support structure having a vertical column supporting the motors, arbors and the control electronics, and constitutes a conduit for virtually all electrical interconnections. Control circuitry controls the takeup motor as a function of film movement between the sprocket and the takeup reel and energizes both rewind and takeup motors during the rewind cycle. The speed on rewind is controlled by the control circuitry by controlling the current to the normal run takeup motor. Failsafe circuitry prevents unintended shutoff during restart situations, but turns off the transport mechanism after a few seconds in case of a film break or runout.

    • A sound motion-picture system employing a film handling cassette within which the film is retained throughout all photographic and audio operations. The film handling cassette includes both an audio station and an exposure-projection station, and the camera and viewer apparatus includes a pair of drive arrangements for progressively advancing incremental sections of such film across the exposure-projection station and for substantially uniformly advancing the film strip through the audio station. To isolate these different film motions, the drive arrangements cooperate with the cassette to provide a free loop of film extending exteriorly of the cassette. A sensing element monitors the loop of film and adjusts one of the drives so as to retain the loop within predetermined limits. In the camera, the audio drive is coupled to the start switch so as to displace the audio drive into a standby position when the camera is not being operated. Additionally, means are provided for eliminating the loop so as to facilitate removal of the cassette from the appparatus.
