    • The present invention is a method and apparatus for digitizing film frames. The invention utilizes different colored strobe lights housed in an integrating sphere, instead of the prior art filter and shutter mechanism. The invention's control system flashes each strobe light in sequence for a predetermined time to expose a film frame to various color components. The various color components of the film frame are projected onto a CCD array with the aid of a lens. Each strobe light is flashed at a desired frequency and for the predetermined time in order to saturate the CCD array with the component of light corresponding to that strobe light. The color data corresponding to each color component are passed to digital signal processors for processing and storage. In one embodiment of the invention, the strobe lights are red, green, and blue strobe lights.

    • To prevent cut edges with studio asynchronous film speeds below 50 frames per second, during the reading in of one film frame into one field store, the other field store is simultaneously completely and frequently read out until the reading in of the one film frame has finished. To prevent cut edges during the scanning of 35 mm Cinemascope films, the frame store is divided into six storage regions each 2 of which belong to one field store are driven alternately from film frame to film frame whereas the 3rd storage region of each field store is driven during each film frame.

    • A frame-rate converting film scanner includes means for continuously advancing film at a selected frame rate and for projecting an image of the moving film onto a solid state image sensor for producing a television signal at a standard television field rate. The solid state image sensor includes: (1) a two-dimensional array of image sensing elements having a width equal to the width of the projected image of a film frame and a height equal ot the projected image of 2+X/Y film frames, where X is the projection rate of the film in frames per second and Y is the field rate of the standard video signal in fields per second, (2) a two-dimensional frame storage array, (3) an output register, and (4) a "drain gate" disposed between the image sensing array and the frame storage array and operable in a first mode to transfer signals from the image sensing array to the storage array and in a second mode to drain signals from the image sensing array. The image of the moving film is projected on the image sensing array to produce an imagewise pattern of photocharge and the sensing array is operated to move the pattern of photocharge accumulated in the array in synchronism with the moving image. As lines of photocharge are advanced to the top of the sensing array, they are dumped by the drain gate. After a predetermined exposure time, a full frame of photocharge is rapidly transferred to the temporary storage array from the image sensing array via the drain gate. The frame of photocharge is read out of the storage array at the standard video field rate via the output register while a new pattern of photocharge is accumulated in the image sensing array. The scanning apparatus includes timing means for keeping track of the location of moving film frames with respect to the image sensing array and clocking means associated with the timing means for rapidly shifting a complete frame's worth of charge into the temporary storage array.

    • In a flying spot film scanner for scanning a cinematograph film frame by frame during continuous movement of the film and producing a television video signal, apparatus is provided which processes signals representative of the direction of film movement, rate of film movement, position of each film frame in a film gate, times for television fields to begin, and rate of vertical deflection in a raster suitable for scanning a stationary film frame, to produce a composite output signal suitable for effecting the vertical deflection and positioning of a raster intended to scan a frame of a film moving so as to give rise to such signals. The required processing is effected by using an up/down position counter in which the number represents the current position of a reference point in whichever film frame is entering a scanning region defined by the film gate, and a composite counter in which the counting is started at the beginning of each television field from the loading in of the current number in the position counter and is effected from this number by clock pulses, some of which are representative of the rate of vertical deflection in a raster suitable for scanning a stationary film frame, and others representative of the rate of movement of the film.

    • To derive TV signals in standard TV interlace scanning format upon continuous scanning of motion picture film, line by line, the scanned signals are stored in a memory and the lines of the film frame, as they are being scanned, are assigned individual line addresses which permits read-out, in accordance with standard TV signal standards, from the individual addresses. In a preferred form, alternate lines, as they are being scanned, have their addresses incremented by a number corresponding to half the scanning lines (262 for the NTSC system), so that alternate sequentially scanned lines will be stored in the memory as addresses corresponding to interlaced reproduction. The address generation is synchronized with movement of the film and the generation of address signals can be either direct or modified to permit reproduction in slow-motion or accelerated motion; the scanning can be direct or modified to compensate for distortion of film exposed through anamorphic lenses to reconstitute signals stored for undistorted presentation although these signals may cover only portions of possible addresses. The memory is read with a half-scanning frame delay so that a complete film frame is stored before the first half-frame is read out.

    • A method for TV recording of pictures from a moving picture film which is continuously moved relative to a recording screen, the pictures of the film each being periodically scanned linewise, whereby the moving picture frequency with respect to the scanning frequency is in a predetermined relation with respect to each other for the purpose of achieving a predetermined recording picture frequency, for example of 50 pictures per second. With different moving picture frequencies (f.sub.L) the following relationship with respect to the scanning frequency (f.sub.A) is maintained:f.sub.L +f.sub.A =+Fin which F means the desired recording picture frequency, whereby at least with one of the moving picture frequencies which is used, fractions of a picture are scanned per scanning period, which fractions differ from 1 picture, particularly exceeding 1.
