    • An attachment for an electrical outlet box, junction box, or similar receptacle is swiftly, manually engageable in an opening of the outlet box. The attachment is inexpensively formed, preferably of a thermoplastic material, and is of a design lending itself to manufacture by the extrusion process to further reduce the cost of making it. The attachment may be of single or double form, and typically includes a resiliently flexible clamping leg one end of which is integrally formed with a mounting means readily engageable in the mounting opening of the outlet box. The other end is integral with a clamping head, that at least partially overlies a cable entrance, and is formed with serrations that bite into the surface of non-metallic, sheathed cable. When a cable is inserted it deflects the clamping head and leg against the spring tension of the leg. A force now exerted on the cable tending to pull it out of the outlet box causes the clamping head to grip the cable and at the same time, a force is transmitted through the leg tending to bind the mounting means against the adjacent wall of the outlet box. In this way the cable is securely locked in place. Intentional removal is readily permitted, through provision of means on the clamping head adapted to receive the bit of a screwdriver or the like, allowing force to be exerted against the head and leg tending to disengage the same from the cable.

    • A cable underpinning usable, for example in spark-plug assemblies, comprises a pipe stub connected to a spark-plug housing and a deformable sleeve provided with a plurality of longitudinal slits or apertures. The pipe stub has a first inner cylindrical surface connected by means of a frusto-conical surface to a second inner cylindrical surface which is smaller in diameter than the surface of the sleeve when the same is in an unstressed or uncompressed state, the second cylindrical surface being provided with a plurality of sharp-edged recesses. Upon the passing of the cable through the sleeve and the force-fit insertion of the sleeve into the pipe stub, bulges are formed in the sleeve which protrude into the recesses, thereby preventing rotary and axial motion of the sleeve relative to the pipe stub. The flexible outer layer of the cable also bulges into the slits, which bulging locks the cable to the sleeve. The sleeve is provided on an inner surface with annular projections which bite into the cable sheath upon the force-fit insertion of the sleeve and cable into the pipe stub.

    • A clamping device comprising an elongated wedge body having a bifurcated end, and a second end opposite the bifurcated end. The wedge body is of substantially rectangular transverse cross-sectional configuration, and is relatively thick at the second end, tapering to a relatively thin dimension at the bifurcated end. The wedge body has first and second sides extending between its bifurcated and second ends. Each of these sides carries a plurality of longitudinally spaced, contiguous teeth or serrations over a major portion of its length. The bifurcation in one end of the wedge body defines a pair of spaced, substantially parallel legs, which legs have continuations of the teeth or serrations extended along one side thereof, and are relatively smooth on the opposite side thereof. In a useful combination, the clamping device retains an electrical conductor in place at the location where it enters a knock-out window in a synthetic resin electrical box. The clamping device is wedged between the conductor and the portion of the box which defines the window so that the serrations carried on opposite sides of the wedge body engage, respectively, the synthetic resin of the box and the insulating jacket of the conductor to firmly clamp the conductor in position.

    • In many assemblies it is desirable to provide a strain relief device to grip an electric cord to prevent longitudinal motion of the cord, with respect to the strain relief device. The disclosed strain relief member surrounds the electric cord and is enclosed within a body member which, when assembled, applies longitudinal compressive forces on said strain relief member to cause a central portion thereof to collapse axially inward and grippingly engage the electric cord. The central portion may include serrations for improved restraining of the cord. The strain relief member may be made of plastic or metal and may include central perforations and/or portions of different thicknesses to facilitate and control the collapse. A metallic strain relief member may serve ground metal sheathed cable. A resilient membrane in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the cord and the strain relief member may be used between the strain relief member and the body member to provide a liquid tight seal. The collapsing feature of the strain relief member permits a strain relief member of predetermined proportions and characteristics to be used with a wide range of cable sizes.
