    • A tunable filter element comprises a resonator unit that defines a longitudinal axis, the resonator unit includes an inner conducting portion defining an inner shorting end along the longitudinal axis and an inner capacitive end opposing the inner shorting end, an outer conducting portion arranged around the inner conductor defining an outer shorting end along the longitudinal axis and an outer capacitive end opposite to the outer shorting end. The inner and the outer conductors maintain an annular gap there-between, and are coupled to form a shorting end at one end and a capacitive end at the other. The filter element further comprises a ferrite insert disposed between the inner and the outer conducting portions and substantially filling the annular gap, the ferrite insert being configured to receive a bias magnetic field in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis.

    • A band-pass filter includes a photonic crystal having a local mode that generates a pass band in a stop band formed by Bragg reflection, a transmission channel that limits electromagnetic waves propagating in the photonic crystal to a mode in which an amplitude direction of an electrical field is a particular direction; and a magnetic field-applying unit for applying to the photonic crystal a DC magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to a propagation direction of the electromagnetic waves. The photonic crystal includes a periodic structure including a low permittivity dielectric member and a plurality of high permittivity dielectric members periodically arranged in the low permittivity dielectric member so that the Bragg reflection occurs in the periodic structure, and a magnetic member disposed in the periodic structure.

    • A planar preselector filter with tunable narrowband excision composed of aerrite substrate having a microstrip line with a fixed-tuned bandpass filter on one surface and a plurality of slotline resonators etched in a ground plane on an opposing surface. The fixed tuned bandpass filter is composed of short resonant elements of microstrip, having a length that is one-half the guide wavelength at the center frequency of its passband. The slotline resonators are positioned on the opposing surface of the substrate such that it suppresses or excises a predetermined narrowband of frequencies within the passband of the fixed-tuned bandpass filter. Moreover, the center frequency of the narrowband excision is varied by applying a tunable magnetic bias field of a predetermined strength across the ferrite substrate.

    • A high power tunable radio frequency circuit which may be used, for example, in a power oscillator, frequency discriminator, diplexer, filter, or a multicoupler comprising a stripline distributed circuit in the influence of a variable magnetic field introduced orthogonally to the plane of the stripline circuit. The stripline is laminated between two layers of planar ferrite members and the D.C. magnetic field intensity is varied to bias the material to a predetermined but variable permeability level, thus changing the propagation velocity of the R.F. signal in the stripline and, therefore, acting to tune the device. Alternately, a microstrip embodiment may be employed utilizing a planar ferrite substrate on one side of the circuit configuration only.
