    • The present invention is directed to a controller having a power handle to control both the propulsion function and the braking function, and a reverser handle to control the direction in which the locomotive travels. The power handle is operatively connected to a propulsion and brake control device which controls the propulsion and braking functions of the locomotive, while the reverser handle is operatively connected to a reverser control device which controls direction of travel. The propulsion and brake control device preferably includes a propulsion controller to control the propulsion function of the locomotive, a braking controller to control the braking function and an indexing mechanism to independently operate either the propulsion controller or the braking controller. The indexing mechanism preferably includes a drive gear operatively connected to the propulsion controller via a first lost motion device which controls the propulsion function when the power handle is moved in a first direction and to the braking controller via a second lost motion device which controls the braking function when the power handle is moved in a second direction. In order to insure mutually exclusive movement of either the propulsion controller or the braking controller, a throttle-brake interlock is preferably provided. Additionally, in order to provide tactile feedback to the user on the movement of the power handle, a detent mechanism is preferably provided.

    • Disclosed herein is a single lever control for marine propulsion devices and the like which control includes a main control lever mounted for rotational movement from a neutral position, a control knob including a laterally extending hand grip portion and removably fastened on the upper end of the main control lever, and a locking mechanism for releasably locking the main control lever in the neutral position. The locking mechanism includes a locking arm slidably mounted on one side of the main control lever for reciprocative movement between a locking position and a released position. The locking arm is moved to a released position by squeezing a lockout button located adjacent the hand grip portion and removably fastened to the upper end of the locking arm. The lockout button includes a pair of laterally spaced slots located on the opposite sides of the main control lever so that the hand grip and the lockout button can be conveniently mounted on either side of the main control lever without relocating the locking arm or removing the main control lever.

    • A control unit comprises a frame member, a drive shaft rotatably supported by the frame member, a lever member slidably mounted on the drive shaft, a shift rod secured to the lever member, locking means fitting around the drive shaft, a drive member turnably supported by the drive shaft and having a toothed portion and a circular outer peripheral edge, a clutch actuating member having a toothed portion meshable with the toothed portion of the drive member and inwardly curved locking edges, a clutch rod pivoted to the clutch actuating member, a driven member secured to the drive shaft, a drive pin mounted on the driven member, a throttle operating member turnably supported by the frame member and having a cam aperture slidably receiving the drive pin therein, and a throttle rod pivoted to the throttle operating member. The control unit operates the clutch and throttle mainly of a marine engine by a single lever and has an improved waterproof structure. The control cable remains free of any bending when the lever member is shifted to warm up the engine.

    • An apparatus for controlling electromotive force (EMF) and/or fluid pressure force (FPF) in a system having a case with walls defining at least one slide chamber and one or more intercommunicating cross-slide chambers. The case walls at the chambers carry circuit terminals for connection in the circuits of a system. The circuit terminals may be electrical contacts and/or fluid ports connected in a system by wires and tubes, respectively. The slide and cross-slide carry circuit making and breaking means for connecting and disconnecting circuits in a system. The circuit making and breaking means may be a switch for co-action with the electrical contacts and/or a channel maze for co-action with the fluid ports. The slide carries at least one cam track and each cross-slide carries a cam lying in a cam track. With movement of the slide in one direction each cam track imparts transverse movement to each cross-slide at desired points of travel. The movement of the slide and the transverse movement of the cross-slide actuates the making and breaking means on the slide and/or cross-slide relative to the circuit contacts on the case to open and close circuits as coordinated in the engineering to the position of the slide and/or cross-slide.
