    • A web motion control system for controlling the tension in a web advanced at a preset velocity in a web transport path between a supply reel and a take-up reel without the use of tension loops, particularly for use in transporting spliced together, developed filmstrips through a film preparation work station. The web (film) is advanced in the web transport path in either a forward or rewind direction in either a velocity mode or a position mode by a motor driven capstan roller. The supply and take-up reels have a hub over which the web is wound in unknown supply and take-up web winding diameters. Take-up and supply reel motors and encoders are attached to the take-up and supply reels for imparting torques to the reels in response to motor torque signals to prevent slack in the film segments between the reels and the capstan roller and to provide reel encoder output signals on at least each 360.degree. rotation of the reels. A metering encoder rotated with the capstan roller is employed to develop an encoder count signal. The web winding radii are calculated from the differential encoder counts at successive reel encoder output signals, and appropriate motor torque signals are developed. The encoder count is also employed in the position mode to control the stopping of the web after a predetermined advancement.

    • A film loading method for a camera comprising the steps of opening a door to uncover a chamber for a film cartridge, inserting a film leader which protrudes from the film cartridge through a film ingress slot in the chamber and into engagement with a film advance sprocket in a film threading path, and rotating the film advance sprocket in engagement with the film leader to advance the engaged leader along the film threading path, is characterized in that the film leader is inserted manually through the film ingress slot into engagement with the film advance sprocket before the film cartridge is received completely in the cartridge receiving chamber or before the door is closed. This allows one to pull the film leader out of engagement with the film advance sprocket from the film ingress slot to abort the film loading operation.

    • Inlet guide structure is provided having complementary outer and inner guides which are adapted to receive film from a drive sprocket of a rolling loop film transport mechanism and to guide the film inwardly towards a path defined between the stator and the rotor of such a mechanism. The outer and inner guides have respective pairs of co-operating side faces for guiding side portions of the film remote from a centre portion of the film. The side faces of the outer guide define a rounded nose portion intermediate ends of these side faces, and the side faces of the inner guide define a depression corresponding to the nose portion so that when in use the guides combine to form a passage which guides the film by contact between the side faces and the side portions of the film. The nose portion and depression combine to cause the passing film to define a transverse curve about the nose portion, and the passage restrains the film to leave the passage at an acute angle to said path between the stator and the rotor so that an impact by the rotor will start a loop to grow and any tendency for creation of a rigidifying longitudinal bend will be significantly limited because the film is rigidified transversely by the transverse curve about said nose portion.
