    • A storm water runoff first flush sampler is provided which includes at le one container which has a top and a bottom. A water collection device is also provided which has an inlet end for collecting water and an outlet end for discharging the collected water. The inlet end of the water collection device is located above the top of the container, and the outlet end of the water collection device opens into the container for filling the container with water. A device is also provided for venting air from the container as it is filled with water and discharging the vented air at a level above the top of the water collection device. This arrangement enables automatic termination of gravity flow to the container when water reaches the level of the water collection device. Also, the water collection device is provided with an aperture that releases the kinetic pressure resulting from water falling onto the inlet end of the water collection device, thereby preventing alteration of the composition of the original sample by additionally collected water. Further, the liquid collection device has a P trap which will prevent sediment from additional runoff water from entering the container after the container is full.

    • A method of, and apparatus for, liquid sampling by way of a self contained unit for: 1) the periodical coupling of a pressurizable sample chamber to a source of sub-atmospheric pressure to cause a bulk sample of liquid for sampling to be drawn into the chamber from a body of liquid by a first passasge; 2) the retention of a sample volume thereof in the chamber while allowing surplus liquid from the bulk sample to drain from the chamber by way of the first passage; and 3) allowing the retained sample volume to pass out the chamber by way of a second passage under the control of a delivery valve wherein the periodical coupling of the sample chamber to a source of sub-atmospheric pressure is undertaken by way of a valve system comprising first and second flexible tubes, the first flexible tube linking a source of air at super-atmospheric pressure to the chamber and the second tube linking a source of air at sub-atmospheric pressure to the chamber; and a first clamping device in the form of a cam which can, depending on the disposition of the cam, alternately: 1) distort the first tube to prevent the chamber from communicating with the sub-atmospheric source while allowing the chamber to communicate with the super-atmospheric source by way of the second tube; and ii) distort the first tube to prevent the chamber from communicating with the super-atmospheric source while allowing the chamber to communicate with the sub-atmospheric source by way of the second tube.

    • Repetitive sampling of liquid from a body thereof is controlled in frequency, dependent upon the depth of the liquid being sampled, so as to accord with the volume of the body thereof. Such depth-proportioning is accomplished, in a system using pressurized gas as a propulsion fluid and determining sampling frequency by gradual release thereof from a source to accumulate to a switching pressure at a given location, through bleeding off part of the accumulating gas against the back pressure of the depth of liquid. Principal uses are in stream monitoring for pollution control, in sewage treatment facilities, and in industrial waste reduction programs.

    • A method and apparatus for collecting and chilling wastewater samples and the like provides an insulated sample container vessel that has cooling coils therein for direct contact and heat transfer with a liquid in the container to rapidly cool the liquid. A refrigeration unit keeps the cooling coils cool. The liquid can be a sample which is required to be stored at 1-3 degrees Centigrade. The chiller is different from similar chillers in that the cooling coils simply are inserted in an insulated container, and can be removed therefrom when it is desired to transport the sample. The sample remains cool during transportation even without the cooling coils. The cooling coils are arranged in the ice chest such that coolant from the chiller enters through the upper coils and exits through the lower coils, causing the liquid sample in the upper part of the container to cool more than the sample in the lower part of the container. The liquid sample drifts down to the bottom, and the warmer sample in the container drifts upwardly, so there is no need for a mechanical stirrer to circulate the sample to make it uniformly cool. The container has a fitting that enables a selected sample to be added to the container interior while the container remains closed.

    • An airtight sampling apparatus for effectively and accurately sampling a waste solution including volatile organic compounds (VOC's) from a main waste solution conduit having a first pressure P1, is provided. The airtight sampling apparatus includes (a) a waste solution sampling conduit having a first end and a second end; (b) an input check valve connecting the first end of the waste solution sampling conduit to the main waste solution conduit; (c) an actuatable waste solution containing and discharge cylinder assembly having a first end and a second end connected to the second end of the waste solution sampling conduit; (d) an attachable and removable airtight sample holding container; and (e) a pressure adjustable output valve for coupling to the airtight sample holding container, the pressure adjustable output valve being located between the input check valve and the second end of the waste solution containing and discharge cylinder assembly, thereby enabling effective and accurate withdrawal of waste solutions including volatile organic compounds (VOC's).
