    • A yaw damper for railway cars comprises a pair of rotary hydraulic units connected to the laterally extending truck bolster of a railway truck assembly on opposite sides of its central pivot bearing member, a pair of connecting plates secured to the corresponding laterally extending car body bolster under a railway car in position on the truck assembly on opposite sides of the corresponding pivot bearing member of the car body bolster, the rotary hydraulic units on the truck bolster connected to respective ones of the connecting plates on the car body bolster by respective ones of a pair of longitudinally adjustable connecting rods. The connecting rods are connected at one end to the pivotable crank or stabilizing lever of respective ones of the hydraulic units and at the other end to connecting lugs of respective ones of the connecting plates. The hydraulic units are positioned against a forward or rearward side wall of the truck bolster in abutting relationship thereagainst to resist torque forces which would otherwise tend to rotate the housing of the rotary hydraulic unit when torque forces are applied to its pivotable crank or stabilizing lever. Such location forwardly or rearwardly of the truck bolster also enables use of a large hydraulic chamber able to provide greater torque and damping effect to control and minimize yaw of railway truck assemblies.

    • A device for compensating the tilt of the carriage body of a rail vehicle when travelling around sharp turns at high speeds includes a tilt compensator with a four-bar mechanism, the tilt compensator being operationally connected to an energy storage device. The four-bar mechanism includes a transversely movable support that is mounted in a floating manner and which is supported on a carriage body suspension for providing vertical cushioning of the carriage body. Preferably, the four-bar mechanism is formed of a wobble stabilizer, two laterally mounted hinged supports and the aforementioned transverse support mounted in a floating manner with a central pivot extending between the energy store and the transverse support.

    • A valve system is disclosed which prevents a shrinkage or an elongation of a shock absorber in response to a compressive or tensile load applied thereto as a result of a rolling or pitching effect of a vehicle. The valve system comprises a switching valve movable among a second position in which a high pressure is introduced into an upper chamber of a shock absorber while a low pressure is introduced into a lower pressure which is separated from the upper chamber by a piston, a third position in which a low pressure is introduced into the upper chamber while a high pressure is introduced into the lower chamber, and a first position (holding position) in which the upper and the lower chamber are disconnected from a pressure source; a first and a second open/close valve which open or close a path between the switching valve on one hand and the upper and the lower chamber on the other hand; and a third open/close valve which opens or closes a path between the upper chamber and a gas spring bladder. A second mode in which the switching valve assumes its second position and the first open/close valve is enabled to pass a flow therethrough is selected in response to the compressive load. A third mode in which the switching valve assumes its third position and the second open/close valve is enabled to pass a flow therethrough while the third open/close valve is closed is selected in response to the tensile load. When neither compressive nor tensile load is applied, the first mode is selected in which the switching valve assumes its first position and the third open/close valve is enabled to pass a flow therethrough. The valve system assumes the first mode when all of the switching valve and the first, the second and the third open/close valve are deenergized.
