    • A can body maker apparatus including a stationary support frame; a housing having forming and ironing dies located therein mounted on the support frame; an elongated ram; a reciprocating ram drive; and a redraw assembly which includes a redraw sleeve for supporting a can body preform thereon; a redraw carriage for supporting and axially displacing the redraw sleeve relative the ram; a redraw electromagnetic coil fixedly positioned relative the stationary support frame; and a permanent magnet fixedly mounted with respect to the redraw carriage in displace relationship with the coil along the coil axis for co-acting with the electromagnetic field produced by the coil for controllably reciprocatingly displacing the redraw carriage. Also, apparatus is provided for applying a force on the redraw sleeve while the redraw sleeve is in contact with the can body preform so that the redraw sleeve applies a pressure on the can body preform and control apparatus for controlling the amount of force applied on the redraw sleeve.

    • A rodless cylinder and an external yoke which slides thereover are mounted in a relatively rigid generally tubular support that has a guide rail mounted thereon with a bearing slide mounted for sliding movement over the guide rail and the bearing slide has a work performing tool mounted thereon.     • An improved chain-type pipe vise system. The vise includes a base member, at least two V-shaped vise members, and a chain having one end attached to the base member. The other end is designed to wrap around a pipe, and extends downwardly beneath the base member to an attachment assembly. To engage the unattached end of the chain within the attachment assembly, a chain guide unit is mounted to the vise beneath the base member. The unit includes a tubular member having a rod slidably mounted therein. The rod includes an outwardly-extending section which is movable along a slot through the tubular member, and biasing means for pulling the section inwardly. In operation, the outwardly-extending section is drawn back and released. This enables the section to move inwardly, engaging the unattached end of the chain and urging it into the attachment assembly.

    • Apparatus and method are disclosed for calibrating a load cell such as a load cell used in apparatus for measuring the forces applied to a pull tab during the formation of an opening in a container lid. The load cell first transmits a signal to a computer-recorder which is indicative of a no force applied condition. A known maximum force is then applied to the load cell which transmits a signal to the computer-recorder which is indicative of a known maximum force applied condition. An intermediate known force is then applied to the load cell which transmits a signal to the computer-recorder which is indicative of a known intermediate force applied condition. The computer-recorder uses the three signals to establish a load slope for use in the force measuring apparatus.
