    • A method of indexing a rotatable disk in a direct access storage device (DASD) having a sensorless spindle motor, by monitoring spindle motor voltage to detect a pattern of commutation spikes timing separations, identifying a spindle motor index from the commutation spike pattern, and matching the spindle motor index with a servo sector index of the disk. A highpass filter is connected to a voltage output of the spindle motor, and an output of the filter is connected to a threshold triggering device. A timing-separation sequence is determined by counting clock pulses, and variations in the timing-separation sequence are compared. The rotor magnets of the spindle motor may be arranged asymmetrically to produce a large deviation in the variation of the timing-sequence. Indexing may be accomplished during servo track write for the disk.

    • A method and apparatus for identifying and filtering a resonance frequency of a support structure supporting a read/write head in proximity with a data storage medium involves obtaining a particular sample of a position error signal (PES) frequency transform, preferably using Goertzel's algorithm. The velocity of the data storage medium is varied, and the magnitude of a particular PES frequency transform sample is computed at each of the velocities. A resonance frequency of the support structure is calculated using the velocity associated with the particular sample having a maximum magnitude. The effects of one or more resonance frequencies associated with a read/write head suspension may be canceled in a position error signal using one or more programmable filters provided in each servo loop. A processor programs the filters using the calculated resonance frequencies and adjusts to compensate for the additional lag introduced into the respective servo loops by the selected programmable filters. A method and apparatus for identifying one or more resonance frequencies of one or more read/write head support structures according to the principles of the present invention may be implemented in a data storage system and, preferably, implemented in-situ a data storage system without resort to circuitry external to the data storage system.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for enhanced performance in the presence of stationary position error signal (PES) outliers in a direct access storage device (DASD). A plurality of PES samples are obtained from a plurality of servo sectors around a track. Utilizing the PES samples, a normalized outlier value is computed for each of the plurality of servo sectors around the track. The computed normalized outlier values are sequentially stored and compared with a set threshold value. A stationary PES outlier is identified responsive to each stored outlier value being greater than the set threshold value. Each identified stationary PES outlier is utilized during predefined operations of the DASD. During a recalibration mode of the DASD, a different track for feedforward generation is selected to avoid an identified stationary PES outlier. When more than one stationary PES outlier is identified from the servo sectors around a track, then data from the track is reassigned to an alternate track and the flawed track is marked to avoid use for future data storage.

    • A method and system for strategically arranging drive assemblies within a multiple drive array that includes multiple drive locations. First, a vibration classification is assigned to each drive location among a plurality of drive locations within a multiple drive array, each vibration classification corresponding to a range of measurable vibration levels acceptable at each of the plurality of drive locations. Next, an inherent measurable vibration level of a selected drive assembly that will be installed within one of the drive locations is determined. Finally, the inherent measurable vibration level of the selected drive assembly is correlated with a preferred vibration classification of a particular drive location, such that the selected drive assembly may be optimally located within said multiple drive array.

    • A method and apparatus for estimating the value of a slider airbearing resonance frequency involves obtaining a readback signal from a data storage medium over a plurality of complete airbearing periods and estimating the value of an airbearing resonance frequency using the readback signal. In one embodiment, a discrete signal segment comprising a plurality of frequency transform components is produced using the readback signal information, and the value of the airbearing resonance frequency is estimated using spectral leakage in the discrete signal segment. A ratio of the magnitudes of a first DFT component to a second DFT component is computed at each of a plurality of sampling rates. Each of these sampling rates is defined by a number of samples per average airbearing cycle multiplied by a frequency falling within a range of expected airbearing frequencies associated with a given implementation. The second DFT component is related to the slider airbearing resonance frequency, and the first DFT component is a DFT component adjacent to or non-adjacent to the second DFT component. The airbearing resonance frequency value is estimated using a minimum of the ratios, which may also constitute DFT component power ratios. A number of different frequency transform techniques may be employed, including Discrete Fourier Transform, Fast Fourier Transform, and Short-Time DFT techniques. One of several frequency transform approaches may be implemented depending on whether the detected airbearing signal is stationary or non-stationary. The airbearing resonance frequency methodology may be implemented in-situ a data storage system.
