    • Embodiments of the invention relate to a transfer device for a container whose interior is under negative pressure and which is closed by means of an elastic stopper. The device has a receiving cap and a piercing mandril for piercing the stopper. Relative to its direction of piercing, the piercing mandril is provided with a front piercing portion and with a rear sealing portion which is of greater diameter. In the position in which a bead of the container is inserted into the receiving cap, the sealing portion contacts the stopper. In this way, a tear in the stopper, which tear has been formed by eccentric application of the device onto the container, can be sealed off.

    • A needle shield is removably mountable to a syringe to protect a user from inadvertent needle pricks and limit contamination of a needle of the syringe. The needle shield includes a plug having an external surface and a shell having an inner surface defining a cavity therein. The plug is positioned within the cavity and a portion of the external surface of the plug is in contact with the inner surface of the shell at a contact area. The plug is non-removably bonded to the shell in the contact area by melting a portion of the shell and the plug in the contact area through application of radiation energy. A securing ring may alternatively be fixed to the shell through the application of radiation energy to secure a shoulder of the plug between the ring and a rib of the shell. The radiation energy is preferably applied by laser welding.

    • A transfer set for transferring fluid, including drugs, vaccines, medicaments, solutions and the like, between a first container, such as a conventional vial, and a second container, such as a conventional syringe having a unique multipurpose resealable member. The transfer set assembly includes an elastomeric tubular fluid transfer and resealable valve member preferably including an open end mounted on the pierceable closure or stopper of a vial and a generally closed distal end having a longitudinal slit and a piercing member is telescopically received within the fluid transfer valve member having a piercing end opposite the pierceable closure. The fluid transfer valve member is preferably formed of silicone and is surrounded by a generally tubular luer connector member having an open end mounted on the pierceable closure and a distal end having male luer threads. This assembly is enclosed within a cup-shaped closure and the assembly is retained to the first container or vial by a collar preferably secured to the vial by crimping. Upon removal of the cup-shaped closure, fluid communication between the vial and a second container, such as a syringe, is achieved by threading the luer connector of the syringe on the luer threads of the tubular luer connector member, which drives the tip through the slit of the elastomeric fluid transfer valve member against the distal end of the piercing member, driving the piercing end through the pierceable closure. In the preferred embodiment, the piercing member includes a generally longitudinal channel which establishes communication between the vial and the syringe through the tubular fluid transfer valve member.

    • A medical injection device is provided which includes a shield system and a syringe which may be coupled to the shield system. The shield system includes a syringe holder, a shield telescopically received in the holder and slidably coupled to the holder and an end fitting which isolates the syringe flange from the holder, preventing damage to the flange. A spring resiliently urges the shield from a retracted position to an extended position. Stop members are provided adjacent the distal end of the holder and the proximal end of the shield for maintaining the shield in the retracted position. The syringe is slidably coupled to the holder, and extends within the shield. Axial movement of the syringe with respect to the holder causes disengagement of the stop members, allowing the spring to move the shield to the extended position. Detents are provided on the holder for maintaining the shield in the extended position.

    • A drug delivery system for administering preset doses of a substance such as a drug, vaccine or the like is provided. The drug delivery system includes a holder and a pre-filled drug container such as a syringe which is securely retained in the holder. The drug container includes a barrel for containing the substance, a movable stopper situated within the barrel, and a blunt end having an opening through which the substance within the barrel can be expelled. The holder includes a distal portion and a proximal portion, each configured to accommodate the drug container, with the distal portion being able to be assembled to the proximal portion, which acts as a plunger rod during activation of the delivery system. A plurality of slots are provided for controlling the delivery of a substance and extend axially along at least one portion of the holder whereby upon activation of the system, the portions of the holder move towards one another upon the application of a minimum force and the stopper moves a preselected axial distance to expel at least a portion of the substance from the drug container. One application is to a nasal drug container, where approximately equal doses of the substance are desired to be administered to each nostril of the patient.

    • A transfer set assembly for transferring fluids between a first container, such as a conventional medical vial, having a sealed open end and a second container such as a conventional IV infusion bag. The transfer set includes a collar having a proximate tubular end portion for securement to the container, a needle cannula and holder assembly, which is telescopically received in a distal tubular portion of the collar, and a closure including a tubular body portion having an open proximate end which is telescopically received over the needle cannula and holder assembly and the distal tubular portion of the collar, a closed distal end portion and an inner tubular portion which is integral with the closed distal end. The inner tubular portion includes a free end having spiral camming surfaces which mate with spiral camping surfaces on the inside surface of the tubular distal portion of the needle cannula holder. The tubular body portion of the closure includes lateral slots which receive projections on the collar and contiguous camming surface which extends toward the proximate open end of the closure. Rotation of the closure relative to the collar first drives the mating spiral camming surfaces of the closure and holder together, thereby driving the needle cannula and holder assembly axially to pierce the seal of the container. Continued rotation of the closure drives the projections on the collar against the contiguous angled camming surface, driving the closure from the collar and providing access to the needle cannula for transfer of fluids to a second container, such as an IV infusion bag.
