    • A linear light valve array having transversely driven, discretely addressable, electro-optic gates which selectively change the polarization of incident light is disclosed. The array has a plurality of spaced gates. Each gate includes a planar light receiving top surface which receives incident polarized light, and first and second spaced parallel electrode receiving surfaces that are arranged substantially normal to the top receiving surface. Discretely addressable electrodes are formed on such receiving surfaces. In response to an applied voltage, the electrodes of a gate establish a transverse electric field which changes the plane of polarization of light passing through the gate and substrate. In another aspect of this invention, a method of making such a linear light valve array is disclosed. In accordance with this method, a strip of photoresist material is formed on a wafer of electro-optic material. Grooves are then cut in the wafer on each side of the strip. A conductive layer is formed on the top surface of the wafer in the grooves and on the strip. The photoresist and its overlying conductive layer are removed. A plurality of evenly spaced parallel grooves are then cut in the wafer to define the gates.

    • An electrooptic device for scanning and information modulating a plurality of light beams across an image zone is disclosed. The device includes a substrate formed of electrooptic material that changes its birefringence in response to an electric field established therein. A time-varying electric field is established in a portion of the substrate which varies the substrate refractive index so as to deflect an incident linear light beam. The device includes a lens arrangement which forms the deflected light beam into a plurality of beams focused at the image zone, and a light valve array which has a pixel portion for each focused light beam. Voltage signals applied to selected ones of a plurality of modulating electrodes of the light valve array cause selected ones of the array pixel portions to change their birefringence and change the polarization vector of their focused light beams as the beams are scanned across the image zone.

    • Image-based products are obtained from a digital motion picture source by utilizing a content playing and display system for (a) displaying a sequence of motion picture image frames from a digital motion picture image source containing motion picture contents, and (b) selecting one or more of the image frames for an image-based product and obtaining a unique frame identification for said one or more selected frames; a content management system that (a) utilizes the unique frame identification and determines whether at least one permissible image-based product can be made from said one or more selected frames, and (b), if a permissible image-based product may be made as determined, obtains file data corresponding to said one or more selected frames from a digital source file containing source information corresponding to the motion picture contents; an order management system for preparing order information for the permissible image-based product from the file data; and an order fulfillment system for generating the image-based product from the file data according to the order information.
