    • Dental implants made at least in part of a highly porous biomaterial such as porous tantalum for enhancing the osseointegration of the dental implant into surrounding bone. For example, there is provided a dental implant which includes a core formed of with a head portion having an abutment interface and a stem portion extending from the head portion. A porous tantalum sleeve is disposed about the stem portion and occupies a substantial portion of the implant/bone interface of the implant. After implantation of the implant, bone tissue may osseointegrate into the porous tantalum sleeve to anchor the implant in position within the surrounding bone. Other embodiments of implants are provided, each implant including at least a portion thereof formed of porous tantalum for improved osseointegration.

    • An instrument and associated method are disclosed for preparing samples for column chromatography. The method includes the steps of applying microwave energy to a sample composition containing at least one solvent to encourage a chemical reaction and generate desired products, thereafter mixing an absorbent media with the sample to absorb the solvent, the media being compatible with liquid chromatography that will separate the expected products, being chemically inert to the expected products, and being added in an amount sufficient to provide a substantially dry mixture of the media and the sample, but less than an amount that overly broadens the resolution of the sample during liquid chromatography, thereafter applying microwave energy to the dry mixture of the media and the sample to thereby encourage the solvent to evaporate under the influence of the microwave energy, and thereafter adding the dry mixture of the media and the remaining sample to a liquid chromatography column and separating the components of the remaining sample for identification and purification purposes.

    • In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a submersible pump that includes a pump housing forming a main compartment for receiving a pump impeller and having liquid entrance and exit openings in said main compartment, and an impeller mounted in the main compartment. The pump housing is adapted for submersion in a body of liquid whose level is to be controlled, and a sealed auxiliary compartment is formed as an integral part of the housing and located to be at least partially submerged in the liquid body. A drive motor is coupled to the impeller for rotating the impeller to eject liquid from the main compartment through the exit opening. An electric-field sensor is mounted in the sealed auxiliary compartment for detecting the elevation of the surface of the liquid body adjacent the sealed auxiliary compartment. At least one controllable switch is connected in the power supply line for controlling the supply of power to the drive motor, and the electric-field sensor is connected to the controllable switch for opening and closing the switch in response to changes in the detected elevation of the surface of the liquid body adjacent the outer surface of the sealed auxiliary compartment.
